Background / History

Tang Sanzang was originally Golden Cicada, the second disciple of Dapeng Buddha Ancestor. Golden Cicada was transformed into a young monk by Dapeng before later reincarnating as Tang Sanzang. 146 442

In his human life, he was born to the top scholar Chen Guangrui and Yin Wenjiao, daughter of Yin Kaishan. After Chen Guangrui was murdered and Yin Wenjiao was forced into remarriage, the infant Xuanzang was placed in a wooden basin and found by an old monk, who raised him in a temple. 187

At eighteen, Xuanzang learned the truth of his birth through a blood-stained letter. He traveled through Chang'an and Haizhou, reunited with his maternal family, and rescued Yin Wenjiao from Liu Hong's imprisonment. 187

He later hosted the Water and Land Dharma Assembly at Hua Sheng Monastery, chosen for the reputation he had earned in Buddhism over eighteen years. When Guanyin revealed that the Mahayana Tripitaka lay at the Great Thunderclap Monastery in the Western Heavens, Xuanzang volunteered to retrieve it for the people of Great Tang. Li Shimin named him Tang Sanzang and granted him the title of Imperial Brother. 189

Appearance

Tang Sanzang is a refined and striking monk whose appearance is repeatedly noted as exceptional. He travels in a kasaya and carries a Zen staff, maintaining a solemn and elegant bearing. 272

  • White teeth, red lips, broad forehead, clear eyes, and a long jaw. 272
  • Skin compared to white jade; described as distinguished and heroic in bearing. 272
  • Later developed bronze-toned skin and a ten-foot Golden Body Dharma Aspect. 398
  • His kasaya gave him a visibly dignified, spirited presence at the Water and Land Dharma Assembly. 189

Personality

Tang Sanzang is compassionate and attentive to ordinary acts of kindness. After a poor elderly couple sheltered the pilgrimage party, he explained to Sun Wukong that accepting hospitality and helping with chores were both good deeds that could bring warmth to others. 196

He remains committed to the scripture mission despite fear, illness, kidnapping, and repeated life-threatening attacks. His resolve was tested by the Queen of Western Liang's charm, yet he ultimately reaffirmed his Buddhist vows and requested permission to continue west. 211 274 275 372

His mercy extends even to enemies. After gaining cultivation, he subdued Black Wolves and Black Panthers without taking their lives, and he stopped his disciples from beating Zhujian because the Fierce Beast could still be useful. 375 378

Tang Sanzang is also learned in Buddhist doctrine and literature. He participated in poetry recitation at Wood Immortal Nunnery, resisted Apricot Fairy's dance, and discussed Buddhist teachings with the abbot of Zhenhai Chanlin Temple. 305 358
