Background

Zhu Bajie was originally an immortal of the Heavenly Palace. After making an unspecified mistake, he was banished to the mortal realm. Guanyin Buddha Ancestor later assigned him to protect Tang Sanzang on the journey west and become the monk's second disciple, with reinstatement as an immortal offered as the reward for completing the mission. 203

While living under the name Zhu Ganglie, he accompanied Gao Cuilan and encountered Sun Wukong. His pig-demon identity was exposed during a battle, after which he disclosed his mission to Wukong. 203

Tang Sanzang first renamed him Wuneng, then bestowed the Buddhist name Bajie. To follow the monastic path, Bajie accepted the Eight Precepts and painfully ended his attachment to Gao Cuilan, revealing his true appearance so she would let him go. He then departed the Gao estate with Tang Sanzang and Sun Wukong. 205
