Background / History
Konoha Service and Independent Research
Orochimaru was Hiruzen Sarutobi’s student and fought wholeheartedly for Konoha during the Second and Third Shinobi World Wars. He later defected and established Otogakure in the Land of Rice. At Neji’s visit, the village contains roughly seven or eight hundred ninja and slightly more than a dozen Jonin; Orochimaru’s personal strength compensates for its modest military size 66 72 106.
His interest in Natural Energy led him to study at Ryūchi Cave. After identifying problems in its cultivation method, he abandoned that training without abandoning the subject itself. Studying Jugo’s innate ability to absorb Natural Energy eventually allowed him to develop the Curse Mark 50 51.
Orochimaru also joined Akatsuki with an interest in obtaining the Rinnegan. Nagato’s overwhelming power made him turn toward Itachi’s Sharingan instead. Itachi defeated him and severed his arm, helping drive his departure from the organization and intensifying his fixation on powerful bloodlines 65 200.
Trading with Neji
Neji first approaches Orochimaru through a Shadow Clone carrying Natural Energy Compression Fluid. Their confrontation becomes a negotiation after Orochimaru recognizes Neji’s Sage Jutsu. He agrees to exchange three techniques—Living Corpse Reincarnation, Spirit Transformation, and Flying Thunder God—for a concentrated Natural Energy supply 50 51.
The exchange is completed with six containers of fluid. Neji verifies the scrolls before handing over containers rigged with explosives, while his display of Sage Mode and the first three Eight Gates discourages betrayal. Their subsequent trades include Impure World Reincarnation and genetic research; Orochimaru’s gene-repair method solves the remaining technical obstacle in Neji’s Gene Completion Plan 54 62 65.
Konoha Collapse and the Loss of His Arms
Orochimaru organizes an invasion involving Otogakure, Sunagakure, and a Kumogakure elite unit. Neji joins with full operational independence. During the Chunin Exams, Orochimaru tests Sasuke, implants his Curse Mark, and suppresses Naruto’s emerging Nine-Tails chakra with the Five Elements Seal 63 68.
During the invasion, Orochimaru and the living Fourth Kazekage, Rasa, surround Hiruzen. Although Hiruzen dies in the operation, his Reaper Death Seal damages and seals the souls of Orochimaru’s hands. Ordinary medicine and bodily healing techniques cannot relieve the resulting spiritual injury 72 90 92.
Unable to obtain Tsunade’s help, Orochimaru prepares to take Sasuke’s body. Itachi intervenes and demands a three-year delay, forcing him to choose a replacement vessel from his prisoners instead. Orochimaru subsequently trains Sasuke in combat and Sage Jutsu while cultivating Kabuto as a genuine research assistant 92 96.
Alliance with Danzo
Orochimaru supplies Danzo with concentrated Natural Energy, reducing the erosion caused by Hashirama Cells and implanted Sharingan. He eventually develops his own Natural Energy production method through lethal Curse Mark experiments, ending his dependence on Neji’s supply 94 154.
Their cooperation expands into a coup and a campaign to unify the Shinobi World. Orochimaru witnesses Danzo defeat Tsunade but does not personally fight her in that encounter. Konoha’s resources then accelerate his human experimentation, Sage Jutsu studies, cell research, and development of an Impure World Reincarnation army 156 164 191.
He also seeks Neji’s help against Akatsuki. Neji accepts limited cooperation against their common enemy but refuses to join Danzo’s conquest. Despite this alliance, Orochimaru and Danzo privately plan to eliminate Heavenly Court after defeating Akatsuki 107 172 201.
Orochimaru agrees to take public responsibility for the operation against the Land of Fire’s daimyo and the Temple of Fire. His followers and Root carry out the assassinations under Sasuke’s command, enabling Danzo’s consolidation of political and military authority 203 205.
Spiritual Escape and Rebirth
During Sasuke’s battle with Itachi, Orochimaru emerges from Sasuke’s body and summons Manda. When Itachi reveals Shisui’s Kotoamatsukami, Orochimaru seals off his mind, abandons his body, and escapes through Spirit Transformation. This avoids sealing by the Totsuka Blade, but leaves him needing another vessel and recovery 213 214.
After entering a spare body, he discovers that his soul is nearing collapse. He withdraws from frontline activity and entrusts Kabuto with cooperation with Danzo and the resurrection-army project 215.
Orochimaru ultimately concludes that the surviving souls within mature hosts continuously reject and erode an invading soul. Rather than persist with Sasuke, he prepares a blank artificial human from Hashirama and Madara cells. At the Uzumaki shrine, he sacrifices his temporary vessel to reverse the Reaper Death Seal, restores his missing soul fragments, and transfers into the artificial body. Taking the codename Kigetsu, he commits to rebuilding his strength instead of continuing frequent body changes 240.
Appearance
- Earlier appearance: Straight hair, a kimono, pale complexion, and a distinctively hoarse voice. Neji associates his pallor with prolonged laboratory work 50 54 65.
- Characteristic mannerism: Repeatedly licks his lips or moves his tongue when excited by powerful techniques and experimental results 56 68 191.
- After rebirth: Has a child-like body and a crisp, clear voice rather than his previous hoarseness 240.
Personality
Orochimaru combines scientific obsession with exceptional caution. He resists Ryūchi Cave’s tempting cultivation method when he finds it suspect, carefully conserves scarce Natural Energy, and abandons a threatened body without hesitation. His willingness to discard his accumulated power and cultivate anew demonstrates unusually strong long-term resolve 51 56 213 240.
He treats people primarily according to their usefulness. Neji describes his attitude toward a person on an operating table as no different from his attitude toward a frog; even longtime followers are not exempt from being discarded. His research includes lethal human experimentation and the exchange of prisoners for Natural Energy resources 106 154 205.
His admiration for bloodline abilities is mixed with resentment toward inherited privilege. Defeats by Itachi and displays of Neji’s strength sharpen his desire for the Sharingan, while discoveries about the soul’s finite endurance redirect his pursuit of immortality. He nevertheless recognizes genuine intellectual talent in Kabuto and values him as someone capable of understanding and advancing his research 65 96 200 213.
Abilities & Skills
Natural Energy Research and Sage Jutsu
- Recognizes Natural Energy fluctuations and identifies Neji’s Sage Jutsu during their first confrontation 50.
- Uses sealed nutrient tanks to regulate concentration and partially recover Natural Energy, avoiding Neji’s wasteful training-room method 56.
- Validates his theory that inadequate Natural Energy replenishment can cause Kekkei Genkai illness; treatment stabilizes and ultimately cures Kimimaro’s condition 56 62.
- Develops an independent supply of highly concentrated Natural Energy gas through human sacrifice and Curse Mark experimentation 154.
- His early cultivation is limited by his vessel’s aptitude; Kabuto’s Sage Jutsu talent substantially exceeds his own 61 96 219.
Curse Mark Development
- Creates a sealing-based system modeled on Jugo’s Natural Energy absorption 51 56.
- Stage One: Moderate absorption; prolonged use can damage the body, though recovery is possible with rest 56.
- Stage Two: Maximum absorption causes tissue mutation. Poor affinity produces rejection, depleted vitality, and potentially fatal bodily collapse 56.
- Improves recipients’ affinity through concentrated Natural Energy exposure, extending transformation duration and reducing side effects 56 61.
- Develops Stage Three, also called the Demon-God State, which greatly changes body size and enhances power, speed, and defense. Kimimaro achieves it first, followed by Sasuke; less talented followers cannot reach it 156 189.
Living Corpse Reincarnation
- Transfers into another person’s body, making powerful bloodline holders desirable vessels 86 92.
- Maintains spare vessels and considers retrieving soul fragments implanted in them when his soul becomes unstable 215.
- Discovers that a mature host’s soul cannot be completely erased and continues to reject and weaken him after possession 240.
- Frequent transfers become unsustainable for his weakened soul, prompting the creation of a blank artificial vessel 240.
Spirit Transformation Technique
- Strengthens his resistance to genjutsu through cultivation of the technique 215.
- Escapes Kotoamatsukami by abandoning his physical body and fleeing as a spirit 213.
- Uses its principles to solve Impure World Reincarnation’s control-range and control-strength problems 201.
- Does not eliminate the underlying danger of soul deterioration or collapse 215.
Impure World Reincarnation
- Researches improvements to Tobirama Senju’s resurrection technique with Kabuto and Danzo 191.
- Plans to use deceased Kage as a conquest army; Danzo supplies remains exhumed by Root 191.
- Discovers that repeated destruction of reanimated bodies depletes their souls’ endurance and can eventually prevent further summoning 200.
- His foundational research enables Kabuto’s later refinements, though restricted battlefield versions still fail to reproduce the summoned Kage’s full strength 219 232.
Snake Techniques, Intimidation, and Defense
- Fear-inducing technique: Projects pressure capable of immobilizing opponents; later enhances it with Sage Chakra 50 68.
- Hidden Shadow Snake Hands: Uses snakes to restrain or attack targets, including Naruto and Jiraiya 68 158.
- Summoning: Dense Python Technique: Engulfs Naruto and Sasuke in a mass of venomous snakes 68.
- Rashomon: Uses two gates against Sasuke’s Lightning Cutter and a four-layer defense against Neji’s strongest attack. The latter absorbs only part of the attack before a nearly four-hundred-meter crater is formed 65 68.
- Manda: Summons the giant snake against Itachi, but it is rapidly overwhelmed 213.
Sealing, Genetics, and Artificial Bodies
- Five Elements Seal: Suppresses Naruto’s leaking Nine-Tails chakra 68.
- Gene repair: Combines biotechnology and formation techniques; his research also covers composition, decomposition, and recombination 65.
- Artificial-human cultivation: Produces his new vessel from Hashirama and Madara cells, alongside four Hashirama-cell clones intended to receive the Hokage souls 240.
- Reverse Reaper Death Seal: Uses a Reaper Mask and cuts open his temporary body to release the imprisoned souls, including the sealed portions of his own soul 240.
