Background

Sasuke became the sole survivor of the Uchiha Clan massacre, publicly attributed to his older brother, Itachi. The loss left him prideful, isolated, and entirely focused on gaining the strength to take revenge. Neji initially regarded him as a potentially useful future ally against Konoha, but also as immature and too weak to be immediately valuable 14.

After Neji easily defeated him, Sasuke accepted a paid training arrangement funded by the fortune he inherited as the last Uchiha: roughly 500 million ryō in cash and 1.7 billion ryō in assets. His training rapidly improved his Chakra, physique, and combat ability, though Neji used Sasuke's desperation and wealth to finance his own projects 15.

Neji later revealed that Itachi had not acted alone: Root, Anbu, and Akatsuki were also implicated in the massacre. Sasuke accepted that he needed more power before acting, but his revenge targets expanded from Itachi alone to include Konoha's covert institutions and Akatsuki 25 57.

Following Neji's advice, Sasuke deserted Konoha and entered Orochimaru's service. Although Orochimaru intended to use him as a vessel for Living Corpse Reincarnation, Itachi forced Orochimaru to leave Sasuke unharmed for three years. Sasuke trained under Orochimaru, learning Sage Jutsu methods and advancing the Curse Mark beyond its usual limits 86 92 96.

Sasuke is intensely proud, easily provoked, and initially inclined to answer humiliation with immediate violence. Even after repeated defeats by Neji, he refuses to abandon his goal and instead becomes increasingly obsessive about closing the gap in power 14 23.

His grief hardens into a willingness to sacrifice everything—including his life—for revenge. He can show patience when necessary, such as restraining his hatred of Danzo during missions, but this restraint serves his vengeance rather than replacing it 57 203.

Sasuke rejects being treated as a tool. He refuses both Itachi's perceived submission to Konoha and Obito's attempt to dictate his path, choosing alliances only when they serve his own campaign against Konoha's leadership 215.

Sasuke commands Guren and Root operatives in the assassination of Daimyo Tanaka Anna. He uses Curse Mark Stage Three to overpower the defenders, while Wucheng escapes with injuries 203 204.

Duel with Itachi

With Neji's help, Sasuke locates Itachi and fights him alone. He resists Tsukuyomi with his unique four-tomoe eye and escalates to Curse Mark Stage Three, but Itachi's Susanoo overwhelms him. Itachi dies after tapping Sasuke's forehead, causing Sasuke's Mangekyō Sharingan to awaken 211 212 213 214.

Akatsuki and the Hunt for Danzō
