Background / History
Danzo and Hiruzen Sarutobi were both disciples of Tobirama Senju. Tobirama judged Danzo’s character unsuitable and chose Hiruzen as his successor. When later reanimated, Tobirama continues to rebuke Danzo, who interprets this as confirmation that his teacher never favored him 241.
Danzo collaborated with Hanzō in the scheme that led to Yahiko’s death, creating an enduring enmity with Nagato and Konan. He is also identified as one of the principal culprits behind the Uchiha Clan’s destruction and collected Sharingan during the massacre 164 191 227.
Under Hiruzen, Danzo carried out covert operations that included assassinating high-ranking Land of Fire officials. His work helped explain the Third Hokage’s tolerance of him. Unlike Hiruzen’s support for the Sarutobi Clan, Danzo concentrated his resources on Root and rarely used his authority to enrich the Shimura Clan 145 162.
Appearance
- Rejuvenated physique: Despite being over seventy, he eventually looks approximately forty or fifty, without his former frailty 176 219.
- Restored face: By the time of the Five Kage Summit preparations, his earlier facial disfigurement is gone and a Three-Tomoe Sharingan is visible 219.
- Sharingan-covered right arm: Reveals ten implanted Sharingan during his confrontation with Sasuke 227.
- Hokage attire: Wears the Hokage ceremonial robe after taking office 219 241.
- Variable presentation: Although previously shown without his old head bandages, he arrives at the summit with one eye covered, an arm bandaged, and a cane 219 229.
- Changed bearing: His formerly sharp, gloomy Root-leader presence becomes more restrained and authoritative as Hokage 219.
Personality
Danzo’s loyalty is directed toward Konoha rather than his own clan. The narrative repeatedly describes that devotion as genuine but warped: he regards conquest, coercion, and human sacrifice as acceptable means of making the village supreme. He dismisses the previous Hokage as too softhearted, especially for failing to exploit tailed beasts as weapons 145 162 164.
His determination does not depend on approval. He accepts hatred and personal condemnation, treats weaker people as expendable, and remains unrepentant when confronting those harmed by his schemes. He deliberately taunts Nagato about Yahiko’s death and threatens to take Sasuke’s eyes 164 227 231.
Danzo combines aggression with deep suspicion. Even after becoming Hokage, he guards against his own confidants and rarely exposes himself while assassination remains a concern. This caution can become a liability: hesitation over Minato’s Flying Thunder God Technique costs him the opportunity to capture the escaping Yin Nine-Tails 209 241.
His confidence is not entirely blind. Pain’s destruction of Kumogakure forces him to distinguish between defeating an enemy and protecting Konoha from devastation. He also becomes more cautious after learning that the Ten-Tails has been revived 219 246.
Abilities & Skills
Sage Body and Hashirama Cells
- Hashirama Cells and concentrated Natural Energy rejuvenate his body and support the use of transplanted Sharingan 94 153.
- His Advanced Sage Body produces enough striking force to crack Susanoo and send Sasuke flying through trees 227.
- Attempts to reproduce his enhancement in other people fail: nearly one hundred subjects die across five experimental batches without a survivor 205.
Wood Release
- Deep Forest Emergence: Rapidly creates forests for battlefield control, restraint, and sustained attacks 158 227.
- Chakra absorption: His trees bind Sasuke’s Susanoo and drain chakra, exploiting the strain on Sasuke’s eyes 227.
- Tailed-beast suppression: Subdues the Six-Tails during the surprise attack on Kirigakure 169.
- Enclosed-space advantage: Fills the underground prison with attacking branches, forcing Jiraiya into a costly defensive struggle 158.
- Support use: Interrupts the Human Path’s attempt to extract the reanimated Fourth Raikage’s soul 228.
Sharingan and Ocular Techniques
- Possesses numerous transplanted Sharingan, including ten in his right arm; Mangekyō Sharingan is also explicitly included in his arsenal 172 227.
- Uses Sharingan perception with Wind Release to effortlessly defeat ordinary assassination squads 222.
- Considers Izanagi as a survival option, but acknowledges that it might not save him against a sufficiently powerful Akatsuki encirclement 200.
- Treats collected Sharingan as transferable assets, giving Kakashi a replacement Three-Tomoe Sharingan 191.
Seven-Tails Transformation
- Uses partial transformation to strike with Chōmei’s enormous insect limbs 227.
- Fully transforms into the Seven-Tails for aerial combat and large-scale Wind Release attacks 227.
- Fires Tailed Beast Balls alongside Kakashi to intercept an incoming attack over Konoha’s battlefield sector 247.
- His transformation is not invulnerable: Sasuke severs several of Chōmei’s limbs, prompting Danzo to withdraw the beast into his body 227.
Wind Release
- Uses Vacuum Great Sphere, Great Vacuum Wave, and Vacuum Barrage during his battle with Sasuke 227.
- Chōmei’s support allows dense, sustained barrages that force back Sasuke even in his Curse Mark and armored Susanoo state 227.
Cursed Tongue Eradication Seal
- Brands shinobi with a curse seal used to enforce obedience and dismantle independent clan authority 156.
- Expands control from smaller clans to peripheral members of major clans until organized resistance becomes untenable 156.
- His centralized rule depends on the absence of a method capable of removing the seal 156.
- Kakashi is among those explicitly branded 175.
Espionage and Military Command
- Maintains Root bases and intelligence networks beyond Konoha, including in the Lands of Grass and Waterfalls 94.
- Combines information from Root, Itachi, and Orochimaru to obtain unusually detailed knowledge of Akatsuki 175 231.
- Uses voice amplification to command a 70,000-shinobi army simultaneously 247.
- Coordinates approximately 20,000 Fire and Wind Release users in a combined attack that vaporizes thousands of White Zetsu 247.
Impure World Reincarnation Army
- Military asset, not demonstrated personal casting: Orochimaru and Kabuto develop and perform the technique; Danzo supplies resources, directs its deployment, and protects its caster 228 241 242.
- Captured enemies become potential vessels, while tissue from powerful deceased shinobi is collected for reanimation 200 222.
- Early versions face a trade-off between retaining the dead’s combat ability and suppressing their independent wills 228 232.
- Kabuto’s later version retains most combat memories, approximately eighty percent of former strength, regeneration, effectively unlimited chakra, and remote control 238.
- Even improved control remains hazardous: Hashirama and Tobirama nearly break free, while Minato’s body escapes under the Yin Nine-Tails’ influence 241.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- High-Concentration Natural Energy Compression Fluid — Obtained through Orochimaru; stabilizes his cellular and ocular enhancements. His researchers initially make almost no progress reproducing it 94.
- Implanted Sharingan — Collected from the Uchiha and used both for his own enhancement and as rewards to subordinates 191 227.
- Arm bandages and sealing markings — Removed before revealing his Sharingan-covered right arm 227.
- Sword — Used against assassins while traveling to the Land of Iron 227.
- Cane and Hokage ceremonial robe — Part of his presentation as Sixth Hokage 219 229.
Relationships
- Hyuga Neji — Initially a capture target whose Sage Jutsu Danzo covets. Neji’s Natural Energy supplies inadvertently enable Danzo’s rise after Orochimaru passes them onward; Neji later regards him as a major threat and refuses to join his conquest project 34 94 153 172.
- Orochimaru — Transactional partner in experimentation, the coup, conquest, and reanimation research. Neither is securely subordinate to the other; Danzo must offer benefits because he cannot confidently subdue Orochimaru 94 156 164.
- Kabuto Yakushi — Research partner and reanimation specialist. Danzo attempts to recruit him more directly, while Kabuto remains loyal to Orochimaru and privately distrusts Danzo 219 238.
- Tsunade — Political opponent whom he defeats, imprisons, and replaces as Hokage. Her captivity is subsequently used to lure Jiraiya 156 158 159.
- Hatake Kakashi — Key coup collaborator and curse-sealed subordinate. Danzo rewards him with a Sharingan and arranges for him to become the Six-Tails jinchūriki 156 175 191.
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Former teammate, old friend, and political rival whose tolerance enabled his activities. Danzo remains inactive during the attack that kills Hiruzen in exchange for Orochimaru’s Natural Energy assistance 90 94 241.
- Tobirama Senju — Teacher who chose Hiruzen over him. Their confrontation after Tobirama’s reanimation exposes Danzo’s resentment and disrespect 241.
- Sasuke Uchiha — Temporary mission commander and eventual enemy. Sasuke hates him for the Uchiha massacre and stolen eyes; Danzo overwhelms him in battle before Pain intervenes 203 227 228.
- Nagato and Konan — Enemies since the scheme that caused Yahiko’s death. Their summit interception targets both Danzo himself and Seven-Tails chakra 227 228 232.
- Jiraiya and Naruto — Opponents seeking to remove him from power. Danzo uses the summit as bait to draw them out and seeks to reclaim Naruto’s Nine-Tails 205 231.
- Fourth Raikage A — Military partner in the surprise strike against Kirigakure, an alliance intended to embroil Kumogakure in prolonged war 169 175 176.
- Ōnoki — Calculating ally in the invasion of the Land of Wind. Ōnoki recognizes Danzo’s intention to weaken rival villages but agrees to cooperate 176.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Pursuit of Neji
After Neji’s rebellion, Danzo volunteers to capture him because of his interest in Sage Jutsu. The operation fails, prompting an enraged highest-level capture order. During Neji’s later attempt to retrieve Haku, Danzo joins the massive ambush force and orders Haku taken into strict Root custody after Neji escapes 34 41.
Danzo later connects the destruction of a Kumogakure base in the Land of Hot Water to Neji’s attack on the Hokage Building. He orders Aburame Ryoma to locate Neji and obtain his cultivation secrets. Root subsequently fights for the Land of Hot Water’s daimyo but fails to prevent the coup; Danzo defends the unauthorized deployment when Tsunade confronts him 94 107.
Seizure of Konoha
Tsunade’s opposition and unwillingness to tolerate Root drive Danzo toward closer cooperation with Orochimaru. Strengthened by Natural Energy, he prepares a coup rather than continuing conventional political competition 90 153.
Kakashi’s false intelligence isolates Tsunade, but Danzo personally defeats her. He takes office under the public claim that she has stepped down through illness, obtaining the daimyo’s approval and the Jonin vote. Within approximately one week, curse seals bring Konoha’s clans under centralized control 156.
Jiraiya infiltrates the prison to rescue Tsunade and faces Danzo, Orochimaru, Kakashi, Ryoma, and Root elites. Danzo exploits the underground environment with Wood Release, but Jiraiya uses an extreme Natural Energy intake and burning toad oil to create an escape opportunity 158.
Wars Against the Other Great Nations
Danzo offers rival villages the spoils of joint invasions while seeking to weaken them through war. He and the Fourth Raikage lead the surprise attack that cripples Kirigakure, captures its leadership, and secures the Six-Tails 159 169 176.
He then persuades Ōnoki to invade the Land of Wind. Konoha’s deployment consists of a 3,000-shinobi vanguard followed by a 5,000-shinobi main force, intended to draw Sunagakure’s defenders away from Iwagakure’s invasion route 176 178.
Subjugation of the Land of Fire
Danzo and Orochimaru organize the assassination of Daimyo Tanaka Anna and the destruction of the Temple of Fire. Sasuke commands the operation, while Orochimaru agrees to take the blame 203 205.
Danzo plans to install a puppet daimyo and purge opposing ministers. The puppet later successfully takes the throne, extending Danzo’s control from Konoha to the entire Land of Fire 205 242.
A retaliatory raid by more than twenty elite ninja devastates his residence but fails to kill him. Wucheng reports that only he and Princess Taniguchi Emi escaped; the others were probably captured or killed 209 210.
Five Kage Summit
Pain’s destruction of Kumogakure pushes Danzo toward stronger defenses and an anti-Akatsuki coalition. His successful foreign campaigns have meanwhile increased his acceptance among Konoha’s civilians and clans 219.
On the journey to the summit, he survives repeated assassination attempts, then overpowers Sasuke. Kabuto’s reanimated Kage and Danzo’s own intervention force Pain to retreat, although Akatsuki obtains a portion of Seven-Tails chakra 222 227 228 232.
At the summit, Danzo exposes Sasori’s disguised presence and secures the alliance leadership without controlling Mifune. He announces an invasion of the Land of Rain in one month. Afterward, Naruto and Jiraiya confront him, discovering that he anticipated their attack and deliberately used the summit to lure them out 230 231.
Allied Campaign Against Akatsuki
Danzo treats the reanimation army as both a weapon against Akatsuki and a potential means of eliminating the other great nations afterward. Preparations suffer a setback when the Yin Nine-Tails escapes in Minato’s reanimated body 241 242.
During the decisive campaign, he coordinates the Allied army’s mass ninjutsu and helps Kakashi intercept an incoming attack over Konoha’s sector. As the battle escalates, he orders the reanimated forces into action against Nagato, Obito, Toneri, and their allies 247 254.
Notable Quotes

“From this day onward, Konoha will take 'unifying the Shinobi World' as its ultimate objective. The daimyo of the Land of Fire and the other four great nations are all obstacles! They must all be removed!” 178
