Background / History

Governance of the Primordial World

Before the Heavenly Dao took over, the Great Dao governed the Primordial World. Its lingering pressure, together with Pangu's, constrained cultivators during the early kalpas. 20

The Great Dao gradually withdrew at the end of the seventh kalpa, and the Heavenly Dao assumed management of the Primordial World at the beginning of the eighth. 141 Even after this transition, communication with the Great Dao remained possible through merit and suitable ritual vessels such as the Altar of the Dao. 145

Recognition of Styx's Works

The Great Dao repeatedly acknowledged works that benefited the Primordial World:

• It approved Styx's Three Thousand Dao Preaching Steles and distributed Great Dao Merit among Styx, the Blood Scripture, the carving knife, and the steles. 91
• It responded to Styx's sacrifice for the Virtual God Realm, granting him a massive amount of merit. 160 161
• It acknowledged Styx's completed Martial Dao and bestowed Merit Power and a Martial Rune. 654
• It rewarded the Saints, their followers, and Styx after the Primordial World's successful advancement. 1480

Primordial World's Ascension

The appearance of the Eye of the Great Dao signaled the Primordial World's impending ascension. The Eye was described as originating from a higher plane that governs the myriad worlds and Chaos; it had last appeared during Pangu's creation of the Primordial World. 1270

The Great Dao set Styx's advancement conditions: guide the Primordial World through its promotion trial, defeat the Destiny Demon God, and lead the Primordial World's forces to victory in the Chaos War. 1437

Dao Core Crisis and Awakening

The later Primal Great Dao entered slumber after being harmed by Guixu. Its Dao Core, found by Styx in the Chaos void, was close to collapse. 1621

The Dao Core instructed Styx to gather the Origins of the Nine Great Source Worlds, including the Primordial World and the Chaos of Ka'os, to delay the Great Dao's collapse and potentially awaken it. 1622 After the ninth Origin was returned, the Dao Core healed completely and the Primal Great Dao awakened to confront Guixu's Will. 1641

The Great Dao's long river can receive a cultivator's Dao Fruit before the Heavenly Dao manifests, nourishing the entrusted Law and supporting further advancement.

The Great Dao is generally portrayed as impersonal rather than benevolent or malicious.

• Styx considers its impartiality reliable only while a cultivator poses no threat to it, leaving its response to a future attempt at transcending it uncertain. 113
