Background

Hancock carries the scars of her past as a Celestial Dragon slave. The brand on her back remained an “unspeakable past” beneath her public identity as the Pirate Empress, and revealing it to Merlin required immense resolve 150. Merlin removed the brand through his healing and Surgical Domain abilities, then removed the corresponding brands from her sisters Sandersonia and Marigold 150.

As ruler of Nine Snake Island, Hancock considers the safety of its ordinary citizens alongside its warriors. She accepted the Shichibukai position under pressure because the Marines had developed ways to enter the Calm Belt, but later sought a stable future for her people rather than dragging the whole island into Merlin's conflicts 180.

Hancock is exceptionally proud, imperious, and easily provoked by disrespect. Her arrogance extends to combat, where she refuses to accept defeat even while gravely injured 149.

Her pride conceals intense vulnerability surrounding her enslavement and her attachment to Merlin. She is initially hostile toward him, but his removal of her and her sisters' brands changes their relationship profoundly 150. Her rivalry with Merlin continues through several sparring matches. After he defeats her decisively, she seeks him out to ask whether he saw the slave brand on her back; he subsequently removes the brands from her and both sisters 148 150.

Hancock and Merlin then cooperate to dismantle Sabaody's slave trade. Together, they free slaves and destroy sixteen auction houses, leaving petrified perpetrators behind as a warning 152.

Reunion and Commitment
