Background
Jonouchi is one of Yugi Muto's closest friends and an eager Duel Monsters player. When Yugi recovers after fainting, Jonouchi immediately presses him about what happened and readily accepts Yugi's offer to test a newly built Deck at a Duel Arena. 1
He is protective of those close to him, including his sister Shizuka, whom he goes to visit at the hospital after losing to Yugi. His rare cards make him a target for the Gryus thieves, though Yugi takes the resulting duel in his place. 3 4
During Duel City, Marik's control turns Jonouchi into Yugi's opponent in a lethal duel. Drawing his Soul Card, Red-Eyes Black Dragon, restores memories of his duels with Yugi and helps him break free of the mind control. He later apologizes to his friends after escaping the incident. 16
Personality
Jonouchi is outspoken, curious, and easily provoked. He complains when Anzu cheers only for Yugi, reacts angrily to Kaiba's contempt, and openly taunts opponents who underestimate him. 1 5 21
His confidence does not prevent him from respecting capable opponents. He recognizes that Rishid is not Marik because Rishid duels fairly rather than relying on mind control, and he tries unsuccessfully to persuade Rishid to leave Marik afterward. 24
Though often associated with luck-based plays, Jonouchi is a resourceful duelist who studies Yugi's tactics, adapts them to his own Deck, and stays composed when his Life Points are low. 21 24 56 71
Abilities & Skills
Duel Monsters Strategy
Jonouchi combines Warrior monsters, Equip Spells, Trap Cards, and improvised plays to create offensive openings.
- Learns Yugi's attack-locking tactic and uses two Captain of the Charge to prevent an opponent from choosing other Warrior monsters as attack targets. 21
- Exploits Fuh-Raid the Iron Knight's drawback by equipping it with Fusion Weapon Murasame Blade, raising its ATK to 2600 rather than having the Equip Spell destroyed. 45
- Uses Thief's Smoke Ball with Iron Knight's effect to inspect Kaiba's hand and discard Enemy Controller. 46
- Uses Magic Arm Shield to seize an opponent's monster during battle and force it to attack its ally. 16 264
- Demonstrates field awareness by reviving Rex Raptor's Dino Base and using it with Time Magician to Fusion Summon Time Sorcerer. 71
High-Risk Gambling
Jonouchi is willing to stake his position on uncertain effects when conventional options fail.
- Activates Lucky Punch while near defeat, gambling on three dice rolls to draw cards; its destruction would cost him 6000 Life Points. 56
- Uses Gate of the Monsters to excavate cards until he finds a summonable monster, eventually reaching Lightning Warrior Gilford after losing several useful cards. 137
- Trusts his Deck for a decisive draw while facing Rishid, then summons Lightning Warrior Gilford by tributing three monsters. 24
Legendary Dragon
Jonouchi awakens the Legendary Dragon card Claws of Hemo during his duel with Rex Raptor. The card allows him to combine a Spellcaster monster with a Legendary Dragon to create an Equip Card. 72
