Background and History

Twenty-three years before the main story, Katalia grew up at the Tarkovsky Ballet Theater in Moscow. Ostracized because of her dark skin and foreign features, she often hid alone in the instrument storage room until the young Beta befriended her and promised to protect her. Their bond endured through the theater’s harsh upbringing. 119

Katalia struggled severely with ballet training and was repeatedly punished for it. Once assigned to combat instead, she proved naturally gifted: she defeated the strongest boy in her cohort with a sweep kick and could overpower Beta in close-quarters sparring. 187

As adults, Katalia and Beta remained longtime associates. When Beta needed to escape Paris under disguise, he sought refuge at her residence; she supplied a place to alter his appearance and drove him toward Charles de Gaulle Airport. 67 69

By the New York arc, Katalia was pursuing Don Luis, whose actions she considered responsible for her family’s ruin and her parents’ deaths.
