Background / History

Yu Xiaogang encountered Ye Lan when the latter enrolled at Nuoding Academy. Calling himself “Master,” he inspected Ye Lan's certificate and was surprised that Blue Silver Grass had awakened with Innate Soul Power Rank Three. He nevertheless dismissed it as a waste Martial Soul and concluded that Ye Lan would not amount to much, even under his guidance 4.

He became Tang San's teacher and placed immense faith in Tang San's Twin Martial Souls. Yu taught Tang that Blue Silver Grass could absorb rings from beast-type soul beasts through his Martial Soul Mimicry Theory, helped him obtain his first Soul Ring, and advised him to postpone adding rings to the Clear Sky Hammer until his Blue Silver Grass reached a far higher rank 12 14. Yu viewed Tang San's eventual rise to Titled Douluo as the path to confirming himself as the continent's foremost theorist 12.

As Ye Lan's accomplishments and theories gained prominence, Yu increasingly measured himself against him. He continued to coach Tang San and Shrek Academy, identifying weaknesses in sparring matches, prescribing weighted endurance runs, and offering tactical advice against Heaven Dou Royal Academy 73 165. His confidence in Tang's future success remained tied to his desire to restore his own status 82 165.

Bibi Dong discovered that Yu's Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul matched the ten chapters of Spirit Hall's Ten Thousand Year Martial Soul Core Review word for word. Her discovery shattered her prior belief in his scholarship and motives 84. After Tang San's defeat by Ye Lan, Yu attempted to obtain Bibi Dong's secret for cultivating Twin Martial Souls, then entered Spirit Hall's Archive Library and tore pages from theory texts to use against Ye Lan's work 178 179.

Bibi Dong caught Yu in the Archive Library with an Imprint Crystal Ball recording his actions. He admitted that he had plagiarized Spirit Hall's theories and intended to deny it publicly; Bibi Dong imprisoned him in the Death Prison for three days and distributed the recording and report across the continent 179. The scandal permanently destroyed his public reputation, and he was later recognized and denounced again while trying to conceal his identity 182 229.

Yu's relationship with Liu Erlong was exposed to her father, Yu Luomian. Yu Luomian expelled both Yu and Liu Erlong from the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan genealogy because of their blood relationship, and later castrated Yu after his attempted assault on Liu Erlong 167 182. Despite the disgrace, Yu later regained confidence after discovering a method to raise Artificial Soul Ring age by using higher-quality Soul Power groups 255.

Near the end of his life, Yu expected Tang San—now a Dual God—to grant him a divine position and take him to the God Realm. Tang San instead condemned Yu's guidance, attacked him with the Eight Spider Lances, and rejected him as unworthy of godhood. He can be attentive and encouraging toward Tang San, treating him with paternal concern and offering tactical guidance, secrecy, and encouragement after setbacks 82 157 165. However, this care is repeatedly entangled with his ambition: Yu fears Tang's failure because it would end his own hope of gaining renown 156.

Yu is also evasive when his status is threatened. He concealed his plagiarism, fabricated claims to retain Tang San's trust, avoided publicly identifying himself after his disgrace, and continued seeking theory material to surpass Ye Lan 82 178 179 229.
