History

Warring States Period

The Uchiha entered the story in a precarious position after Clan Leader Uchiha Tajima and Senju Butsuma killed each other in battle. The clan feared that retreating from Mount Kumogakure would expose it to a Senju pursuit, as the Senju still held the broader military advantage. 1

Tajima’s sons, Madara and Izuna, awakened the Mangekyo Sharingan after witnessing their father’s death. Their emergence shifted the clan’s succession struggle: Madara defeated Uchiha Gakugyo and became Clan Leader, while Izuna became Vice Clan Leader. 1 16 17

During the ensuing truce with the Senju, the brothers reorganized the clan. Madara assigned major posts, while Izuna introduced a training structure in which one Jonin trained and led nine students for combat practice and missions. 18 Izuna also expanded the clan’s ninjutsu scroll collection with newly developed techniques, strengthening Madara’s administration against internal dissent. 19

Northwestern Expansion

When the Hagoromo, Fuma, Watanabe, Saito, and Onigawa clans formed an alliance against the Uchiha, Izuna chose a preemptive attack rather than risk the alliance gaining Ino-Shika-Cho support. 21 The Uchiha defeated the alliance despite being outnumbered, with Izuna killing Onigawa leader Kōkawa Yokōichi using an Amaterasu Rasengan. 22

The conflict culminated in the Northwest War and the destruction of the Hagoromo Clan. Izuna led 400 Uchiha ninja in the final campaign, looted Hagoromo territory, and distributed rewards by merit. 47 The surviving northwestern Four Clans subsequently accepted vassalage under the Uchiha and relocated into Uchiha territory as affiliated clans. 56 127

War with the Senju

The Uchiha’s long-running war with the Senju remained central to the clan’s identity. Izuna’s rise gave the clan new weapons, battlefield strategy, and a leader capable of confronting Senju Takeuma and Hashirama directly. 73 95 96

After Izuna gained the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan, the Uchiha secured a major victory over the Senju and took Mount Kumogakure, formerly the dividing line between the two clans. 113 125 126 The victory established Izuna, Madara, and Hashirama as the era’s foremost figures, with Izuna recognized as the leading member of the “Three Heroes of the Warring States.” 125

Despite entrenched hatred among their members, the Uchiha and Senju eventually formed an alliance aimed at reshaping the Warring States order. Their agreement envisioned campaigns against the Hyuga, Sarutobi, Shimura, and other major clans. 194 196

Konohagakure Era

Izuna later became Uchiha Clan Leader after Madara left Konoha with more than a hundred Uchiha, chiefly people who had lost family and friends during the Warring States Period. The remaining clan accepted Izuna’s succession without open resistance. 280

Under Izuna’s leadership, the Uchiha reached their peak position in Konoha. He was regarded as a founder of the village and its most powerful ninja, while Tsunade’s decision to become his disciple signaled the clan’s supremacy over the Senju and other Konoha factions. 357

This dominance ended after the Shinobi Department founded by Izuna was abolished and the major clans lost political influence to Hiruzen Sarutobi and Shimura Danzō. 433 Later, Fugaku Uchiha led a faction planning a coup against Konoha, considering cooperation with Kirigakure or the release of the Nine-Tails. 460

Itachi Uchiha’s subsequent massacre destroyed the Konoha-based Uchiha clan, while Root and Obito collected Sharingan from the dead. Sasuke was left as the sole known survivor within Konoha. 467 468 However, Uchiha who had remained with Madara and forces maintained on the moon survived, later returning in large numbers. 534

Territory and Population

The Uchiha Clan Grounds placed Uchiha residences in an inner territory, while non-Uchiha civilians—farmers, merchants, and laborers—lived around the clan’s central district. These civilians formed the clan’s productive base but were barred from the inner territory. 48

Following the Northwest War, Izuna commissioned a memorial stone at the clan gates for fallen Uchiha, including those whose remains could not be recovered from the battlefield. 48

Affiliated Clans

• Northwestern Four Clans — The Watanabe, Fuma, Saito, and Onigawa clans became Uchiha vassals after the collapse of the Five-Clan Alliance. 56
