Background / History

According to Madara Uchiha’s account, chakra was once possessed only by Kaguya Ōtsutsuki after she ate the God Tree’s fruit. Her sons, Hagoromo and Hamura, spread it to others. After they sealed Kaguya, her power was divided into the nine Tailed Beasts 543.

Izuna later identified deposits of primordial chakra left by the God Tree beneath sites across the Five Great Nations. He called these sites Spiritual Veins 350 351 368.

Forms and Use

Chakra natures

• The five basic elemental natures are Fire, Wind, Lightning, Water, and Earth. Izuna’s skill tree initially listed Fire, Wind, and Lightning as his active natures, while Water and Earth remained unavailable to him 2 23.
• Yin and Yang are distinct from the five elemental natures. Izuna and Madara found both in the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, while God Tree chakra associated with the elemental natures remained at sites in the shinobi world 228 350.

Sage chakra

• Sage chakra is formed by drawing in Natural Energy and combining it with one’s own chakra. Absorbing too much Natural Energy can cause a loss of control or death 59 67.
• Mito Uzumaki used a sealing array to suppress the Natural Energy overwhelming Izuna while he refined sage chakra 82.
• Izuna found that sage chakra improved his strength, speed, and perception, but did not restore eyesight already damaged by Mangekyō Sharingan use 83 86.

Reserves and consumption

• Techniques draw on a user’s finite chakra reserves. Shadow Clones can dissipate when they lack enough chakra to perform demanding ninjutsu 65 114.
• Some techniques consume chakra exceptionally quickly: Izuna struggled to maintain the Flying Thunder God Barrier even after activating the Rinnegan 290.
• Hashirama’s Wood Dragon can drain chakra from its target, including Izuna’s Susanoo 120 163.

Role in Izuna’s Plan

Izuna planned to revive the God Tree through the Spiritual Veins and return humanity’s chakra to it, leaving only a small number of people able to possess chakra. He intended to take the resulting fruit for himself 522 543 544. Akatsuki members later poured Indra and Asura’s chakra into the Spiritual Veins; the revived God Tree absorbed chakra and produced the fruit Izuna consumed 553.
