Background / History

Warring States Period

Madara and his younger brother Izuna awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan after witnessing their father, Uchiha Tajima, die in battle. The brothers were the only known Uchiha of their era to awaken this dōjutsu, and Madara initially relied on Izuna's advice to avoid using it recklessly. 1 7 16

During the succession crisis following Tajima's death, Madara defeated Uchiha Gakugyo in a formal duel. His Mangekyō's future-prediction ability allowed him to evade Gakugyo's attacks and secure the position of Uchiha Clan Head, with Izuna becoming Vice Clan Head. 17

As clan head, Madara reorganized key positions, assigned Gakugyo to the Mount Kumogakure garrison, elevated him as a pre-selected Elder, and adopted a training structure in which one Jōnin led nine students. 18

Madara publicly led the Uchiha into war against the Sarutobi and Shimura Clans, accepted the northwestern Four Clans as Uchiha vassals, and repeatedly fought at the front of the campaign. His aggressive command style raised morale and spread his fame, though allied leaders privately preferred Izuna's more economical strategy. 54 56 65

Declining Eyesight and the Kaguya Campaign

Madara's Mangekyō Sharingan could predict Tobirama Senju's Flying Thunder God movements, but its severe side effects prevented him from sustaining battles against Hashirama's Wood Release. His vision deteriorated until he struggled to see beyond a few steps. 99 126

Ignoring the newly formed Senju–Kaguya alliance, Madara led only ten Uchiha Jōnin in an assault on Kaguya Village. He used Sage Mode, a mature Susanoo, Storm Release, and massive Fire Release techniques, but the Kaguya's numbers and bone manipulation overwhelmed his force. 151 152

After over ten hours of fighting, Madara was nearly unable to stand, with only three Jōnin remaining. He used Izanagi to escape capture, but was later intercepted, captured, and medically treated by Hashirama—an outcome Madara considered deeply humiliating. 153 158

Eternal Mangekyō Return

With the northern front collapsing, Izuna arranged an eye transplant to restore Madara's sight. Madara emerged with the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan and immediately chose to personally confront the Hatake and Kaguya forces. 182 183

His return turned the northern front in the Uchiha's favor. Madara deployed armored and fully formed Susanoo manifestations, Storm Release techniques, and overwhelming firepower to force the Hatake and Kaguya Clans into retreat. 185 187

Departure from Konoha

After Konoha's founding, Madara opposed Hashirama's proposal to distribute the Tailed Beasts among the Great Ninja Villages. He viewed retaining them as necessary for Konoha's future strength, while Hashirama regarded distribution as a path to preventing future war. 277

Madara later led more than one hundred Uchiha, many of whom had lost loved ones during the Warring States Period, out of Konoha in pursuit of what he called “true, eternal peace.” Izuna succeeded him as Uchiha Clan Leader. 279 280

Madara was publicly declared dead and buried in the Uchiha back mountain after his battle with Hashirama. A later account reveals that Uchiha Yusuke used Izanagi to create the appearance of Madara's death. 302 362

Later Plans and Resurrection

Operating in secret, Madara researched the Tenseigan and pursued the Rinnegan's completion. As his life waned, he relied on the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path for Chakra and selected Obito Uchiha as a key piece in his plan. 294 388 435

Madara later died, leaving Izuna to bury him and continue their plan. He was subsequently resurrected rather than reincarnated, returned with the Rinnegan, and reignited his rivalry with Hashirama. 439 533

During the later Six Paths conflict, Madara assisted Izuna in using Sasuke as the final sacrifice for Kaguya Ōtsutsuki's manifestation. Kaguya immediately repelled Madara with her Chakra after appearing. 549

Appearance

Madara is typically depicted in Uchiha combat armor and carries the clan's Flame Gunbai. His eyes visibly change with each Sharingan evolution, from three tomoe to Mangekyō, Eternal Mangekyō, and eventually Rinnegan. 1 183 533

  • Wore a specially crafted blood-red armor set before the Kaguya campaign. 147
  • Carries the Uchiha Flame Gunbai, an emblem of the clan head's authority. 65 280
  • Bears Sage Mode markings around his eyes when using natural energy. 152
  • Commands Susanoo forms ranging from armored manifestations to Complete Body Susanoo. 185 211

Personality

Madara is proud, combative, and intensely competitive, especially toward Hashirama, Izuna, and anyone who questions his strength. Being compared unfavorably to either brother provokes him, and he is prone to answering challenges through direct combat. 87 211

As a leader, he is decisive and capable of political calculation. He rewarded and repositioned rivals rather than simply eliminating them, recognized the strategic value of the Four Clans' vassalage, and understood the importance of replacing the elder faction with younger officials. 18 56 126

His confidence can become recklessness. The Kaguya assault showed his willingness to gamble his own life and his subordinates' lives on an audacious strike, even when Izuna's caution would have been safer. 151 153

Despite their disagreements, Madara trusts Izuna deeply. He respects Izuna's judgment on matters involving the Mangekyō, accepts his brother's political protection when his eyesight fails, and reacts strongly to threats against him. 7 158 234

Abilities & Skills

Mangekyō Sharingan

Madara's Mangekyō Sharingan manifested two subtle but exceptionally useful abilities.

  • Left eye — Chakra fusion and conservation: Enables him to combine elemental releases with lower Chakra expenditure while increasing their power. 16
  • Right eye — brief future prediction: Lets him foresee an opponent's imminent actions, making him especially dangerous against close-range fighters and teleportation users. 17 87
  • Limitation: Extended Mangekyō use rapidly damaged his eyesight and eventually left him nearly blind. 99 126

Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan

After receiving new eyes through Izuna's plan, Madara regained his vision and advanced to the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan. The restored dōjutsu enabled his return to frontline combat and supported his higher Susanoo forms. 183 185

Sage Mode

Madara cultivated Sage Mode using natural energy connected to the Jūgo Clan.

  • Provides natural-energy sensing strong enough to compensate for his blindness. 183
  • Enhances his combat presence alongside Susanoo and elemental techniques. 152
  • Did not fully remove Mangekyō drawbacks; its effect was inferior to Hashirama-cell augmentation. 126

Susanoo

Madara can manifest multiple increasingly powerful Susanoo forms.

  • Used a mature Susanoo during the Kaguya Village assault. 152
  • Deployed armored and fully formed Susanoo manifestations after gaining the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan. 185
  • Awakened Complete Body Susanoo while facing a 3,000-man Sarutobi–Shimura force. 211
  • Combined his Complete Body Susanoo with Izuna's for a dual Sword of All Creation strike against Toshishiro Ōtsutsuki. 233
  • Controlled a Susanoo-armored Nine-Tails against Hashirama's Senju Great Buddha. 300

Elemental Ninjutsu and Fusion Techniques

Madara specializes in destructive Fire and Lightning techniques and uses his ocular power to support elemental fusion.

  • Fire Release: Used techniques including Great Fire Destruction, Fire Dragon Flame Bullet, Majestic Fire Annihilation, and Majestic Fire Destruction. 16 65 152 211
  • Storm Release: Employs fusion-based techniques such as Dragon Fang, Arashi Oni Ryū, and Thunder Cloud Calamity Wave. 152 185 211
  • Lightning Release: Used Gratitude Wave, Sage Art: Black Heart Raikiri, and Kirin. 16 211 234
  • Scorching Release: Used alongside Storm Release against Toshishiro Ōtsutsuki. 233
  • Shadow Clone Technique: Created more than one hundred clones before having them launch Fire Release attacks. 211

Rinnegan

After his resurrection, Madara displayed the Rinnegan in battle against Hashirama. The provided account establishes the dōjutsu's presence but does not identify a unique Rinnegan technique used by him. 533

Forbidden Techniques

  • Izanagi — Used to escape the Kaguya after his force was reduced to three remaining Jōnin. 153
  • Susanoo Raikiri — A forbidden technique used to temporarily incapacitate Hamura Ōtsutsuki's regenerating stone statue. 234

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Uchiha Flame Gunbai — Clan heirloom and symbol of Uchiha leadership; used to block a combined Wind–Fire attack without injury. 65 280
  • Gunbai and scythe — Madara's primary close-combat weapon pairing. 65
  • Blood-red armor — Crafted by the Uchiha weapon department on Izuna's order before Madara's Kaguya operation. 147
  • Ninja HawksUchiha summons used for transport, communication, and limited combat support. 154

Relationships

  • Izuna Uchiha — Younger brother, Vice Clan Head, closest adviser, and frequent battlefield partner. Izuna guided Madara's Mangekyō use, arranged his Eternal Mangekyō transplant, and later continued their plan after Madara's death. 7 183 439
  • Hashirama Senju — Longtime rival, former friend, and fellow Konoha founder. Their incompatible views on peace and power eventually drove Madara away from Konoha. 14 277 279
  • Tobirama Senju — Hostile rival whose Flying Thunder God Madara could counter through future prediction; Tobirama attempted to stop Madara's departure from Konoha. 87 279
  • Uchiha Gakugyo — Rival claimant to the clan head position. Madara defeated him, then assigned him to command Mount Kumogakure and named him a pre-selected Elder. 17 18
  • Uchiha Yusuke — Trusted subordinate who later used Izanagi to create the appearance of Madara's death. 278 362
  • Black Zetsu — Regarded Madara as a potential vessel for Kaguya's revival, though Madara and Izuna became direct obstacles to Black Zetsu's plans. 233
  • Obito Uchiha — Chosen by Madara as a crucial successor piece after Madara's life began fading. 435
