Background / History

Di Chen is an elder of the Divine Sword Sect and a long-standing fellow disciple of Ling Tiannan. He serves as the sect's Law Enforcement Elder and is responsible for matters concerning entry into the sect. Chen Pingping is his disciple. 6 7

When Chen Pingping reported encountering Jing Pu, Di Chen initially dismissed the account as a deception. He believed Jing Pu's wish to enter the Divine Sword Sect as an Outer Disciple proved that he could not be the overwhelming senior Ling Tiannan suspected. 6 7

Cultivation

Nascent Soul Peak

Di Chen has cultivated for nearly a thousand years and was at the peak of the Nascent Soul stage. He intended to forge a sword from his Golden Pearl Iron if he ever broke through to Spirit Emergence. 14

Personality

Di Chen is initially proud, skeptical, and blunt. Convinced that Jing Pu was a fraud exploiting Ling Tiannan's poor judgment, he openly challenged him despite Ling Tiannan's warnings. 7

After witnessing the celestial phenomenon caused by Jing Pu merely drawing his sword, Di Chen became terrified of the consequences of his actions. His regret was sincere and extreme: he remained in Jing Pu's study, repeatedly kowtowing until Jing Pu returned, refusing to use True Qi to lessen the physical strain. 8 9 13

He is highly appreciative of Jing Pu's paintings and deeply affected by Jing Pu's generosity. Although excitable and occasionally comical in his reverence, he becomes respectful and accommodating toward Jing Pu thereafter. 12 13 14 22

Equipment / Items

• Golden Pearl Iron — A rare and precious piece of iron that Di Chen had kept as one of his most valuable possessions. He gave it to Jing Pu as an apology and token of gratitude; Jing Pu later used it to forge farming tools. 14 16
• “Spring Scenery” — A painting Jing Pu created for Di Chen after accepting his apology. Di Chen received it with visible excitement. 21 22

Relationships

• Jing Pu — Initially regarded Jing Pu as a fraudulent outsider and challenged him to a three-move duel. After seeing Jing Pu's sword-drawing phenomenon, Di Chen sought forgiveness, gifted him Golden Pearl Iron, and received a painting from him. 7 8 13 14 22
• Ling Tiannan — Fellow Divine Sword Sect elder. Ling Tiannan repeatedly rebukes Di Chen for provoking Jing Pu and later discusses Jing Pu's favor and paintings with him. 7 9 18

Challenge to Jing Pu

Di Chen challenges Jing Pu to remain standing against an examiner for three moves, intending to expose him as a fraud and prevent his admission into the Divine Sword Sect. Jing Pu's act of drawing his sword transforms the sky and causes cultivators' Spiritual Power and True Qi to surge; Di Chen immediately realizes Jing Pu is a genuine great power. 7 8

Apology and Reconciliation

Terrified that he offended Jing Pu, Di Chen waits in Jing Pu's study and repeatedly kowtows until Jing Pu returns. Jing Pu forgives him without resentment and offers to create a painting for him. Di Chen responds by presenting Golden Pearl Iron. 13 14

Recipient of “Spring Scenery”

After waiting while Jing Pu's courtyard is disrupted by Ling Jing and Lie Chun's digging, Di Chen finally requests his promised painting. Jing Pu produces Spring Scenery, which Di Chen accepts with trembling hands. 18 21 22

Trivia

• Di Chen accidentally kowtowed three times to Jing Pu's desk after seeing Ling Tiannan kowtow in gratitude for the Longevity painting, only to learn that the painting belonged to Ling Tiannan rather than himself. 12
• Jing Pu mistook Di Chen's intense remorse and reverence as evidence that he simply wanted a painting. 13
