Background and History
Illya joined Shinji's early Fate/stay night production while still an elementary-school student. She initially hoped that taking more scenes would let her avoid school, only for Shinji to assign her a one-on-one tutor during filming at Einzbern Castle. 5
Unlike the darker version of Illya she was asked to portray, Illya herself is described as a genuinely innocent, pure young lady. This gap made her early role difficult: she often tried to act overly mature because the scripted Illya was older than Shirou, but she improved quickly with practice. 5 6
Before being cast as the lead of Magical Girl☆Illya, she had already appeared as Illya in Fate/Zero, Unlimited Blade Works, and Heaven’s Feel. She hoped the magical-girl series would become her first major signature role beyond simply “playing Illya.” 164
Appearance
Illya is a petite silver-haired girl with ruby-like red eyes and an angelic appearance that contrasts sharply with the threatening characters she can portray. 5 6
- Usually associated with the white special attire of the Einzbern family. 165
- Her Magical Girl outfit uses fluttering ribbons and a deliberately sweet, innocent visual design enhanced through makeup and Magecraft. 166
- Her Archer Class Card form features a billowing red coat, fitted black vest, and bow. 264
Personality
Illya is playful, expressive, and easily excited by praise. She confidently calls herself a genius actress, eagerly shows Shinji her performances, and openly resents schoolwork and tutoring. 5 6 164
She is also naive and gullible despite occasional suspicion. She immediately recognized Ruby as questionable because of its inappropriate mannerisms, yet still fell for its contract and was repeatedly manipulated into attacking Rin. 238 239
Her self-image is shaken after the awakening of her sealed power. Frightened by destroying every Assassin at once, she resigns from being a Magical Girl and withdraws from the mission until Irisviel challenges her to confront both her fear and her feelings for Miyu. 272 274 275
Abilities & Skills
Acting
Illya is an experienced child actor who has portrayed both innocent and sinister versions of herself across several Fate productions. 164
- Her threatening Fate/stay night performance convinced Shirou that she might genuinely harm him. 6
- Shinji used low-angle shots to emphasize the dominance and pressure of her villainous portrayal. 7
- She initially struggled to separate her Magical Girl☆Illya performance from her previous Fate/stay night acting style. 166 167
- Her acting in Magical Girl☆Illya is considered adequate for tokusatsu, but not exceptional by Shinji's more demanding film standards. 271
Suggestion Magic
Illya can use Suggestion Magic to influence another person's mental state.
- Assisted Shirou's performance by placing him in a semi-hypnotic state, making his fear during their kidnapping scene more convincing. 6
- Its use was directed by Shinji for filming rather than combat. 6
Magical Girl Magecraft
After contracting with Ruby, Illya can transform and fight using magical attacks and defensive abilities. 238
- Ruby's protection allows her Magical Girl form to withstand most attacks. 254
- Her attacks are varied and visually flashy, reflecting multiple magical-girl conventions rather than a single efficient fighting style. 247
- Her normal combat record is poor; several victories depend on outside assistance or exceptional circumstances. 288
- Serious injuries and the sight of blood can overwhelm her because she lacks the harsh training and distorted worldview of the Fate/stay night version of Illya. 254
Sealed Power
A second presence within Illya can awaken and unleash enormous magical energy. 263 272
- The power manifests as vast magical output capable of eliminating every Assassin in a single attack. 272
- It has awakened at least twice, consuming magic accumulated over ten years. 275
- Illya initially fears this power and does not understand its origin. 272 275
- Irisviel teaches her that power itself is neither good nor evil; its meaning depends on the will of the person using it. 275
Class Card Installation
Illya can invoke Class Cards through Dream Summon. 264
- Installs Archer's Card to assume an Archer-inspired form and wield a bow. 264
- The transformed state grants enough power to defeat Saber, but causes severe magical exhaustion afterward. 264 265
- Bazett later defeats Illya and recovers the Archer and Lancer Cards from her group. 288 289
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Ruby — Sentient Magical Staff that contracts with Illya, enables her transformation, and frequently tricks or provokes her into trouble. 238 239
- Archer Class Card — Used for Dream Summon and Illya's red Archer form. 264
- Magical Girl costume — Ribboned magical-girl attire whose appearance is enhanced by makeup and Magecraft disguise techniques. 166
Relationships
- Shirou Emiya — Adoptive brother. Their relationship begins with Illya portraying his captor, but develops into mutual familial affection; Shirou insists that calling him “Older Brother” makes her his sister. 6 173 196
- Irisviel — Mother. Irisviel is affectionate but overwhelming, and acts as Illya's guide when Illya fears her sealed power and worries about Miyu. 273 274 275
- Matou Shinji — Director and mentor whom Illya calls “Brother Shinji.” He praises and casts her frequently, but his demanding production methods and tutoring arrangements frustrate her. 5 6 164 165
- Tohsaka Rin — Co-star and Magical Girl partner. Rin helps Illya endure costume testing, while their on-screen clashes are often caused by Ruby's interference. 165 239
- Miyu — Closest friend and fellow Magical Girl. Illya's concern for Miyu helps her confront her own fear; they later defeat Berserker together, after which Miyu declares Illya her only lifelong friend. 274 275 276
- Ruby — Her Magical Staff. Ruby recruits Illya through deception, gives reckless instructions, and causes repeated conflicts between Illya and Rin. 238 239
- Kirei Kotomine — Strongly disliked by Illya, largely because of his overpowering smell and attempts to make her eat spicy Mapo Tofu. 172 186
- Matou Sakura — An older-sister figure whom Illya admires after watching Sakura torment Kirei, whom Illya fears. 186
- Bazett Fraga McRemitz — Overwhelming opponent who defeats Illya and recovers Class Cards from her. 288 289
Story Role / Major Arcs
*Fate/stay night* Filming
Illya plays the threatening Einzbern-side antagonist who kidnaps Shirou and demands that he become hers. Her performance is strengthened through Suggestion Magic, a metal knife prop, and Shinji's camera direction, producing a scene convincing enough to frighten Shirou for real. 6 7
*Heaven’s Feel*
Within the Heaven’s Feel narrative, Illya guides Shirou after his losses, explains the history of the Holy Grail War, and ultimately sacrifices herself to close the Great Holy Grail. Her sacrifice fulfills Shirou and Sakura's wishes while accepting her fate as an artificial human. 186 196
*Magical Girl☆Illya*
Shinji keeps Illya as the lead despite suggestions to replace her with Sakura. She struggles at first to project the innocent aura expected of a magical-girl protagonist and repeatedly falls back on her darker Fate/stay night acting habits. 162 166 167
After contracting with Ruby, Illya becomes a Magical Girl and joins Rin, Luviya, and later Miyu in recovering Class Cards. Her first major power awakening occurs during the battle with Saber, followed by her Archer Card installation. 238 258 264
Identity Crisis and Berserker Battle
After destroying all of Hundred Faces Assassin with her awakened power, Illya becomes afraid of herself and resigns from the Magical Girl mission. Irisviel's guidance and Miyu's danger force her to recognize Miyu as her friend, leading to Illya and Miyu's combined victory over Berserker. 272 274 275 276
Chloe and Bazett Arcs
During the Chloe Arc, Illya also portrays Illyasviel von Einzbern, a mischievous character closer to the original Fate/stay night Illya; this second role comes naturally to her after playing FSN Illya three times. 285 290
Bazett later overwhelms Illya in direct combat, takes the Archer and Lancer Cards, and leaves Illya injured until Miyu arrives to protect her. 288 289
