After making all the arrangements, Namikaze Minato rushed through the woods with Uchiha Mai, hot on the heels of the fleeing enemies.
As an elite Jonin, Minato's ability to track enemies and sense chakra was top-tier, barely inferior to the tracking skills of Kakashi's Pakkun.
Deep in the woods, Minato tracked the traces left by the enemies while briefing Uchiha Mai, who was running beside him: "I have a rough impression of this ambush squad."
"The middle-aged man is their captain, Narita Daisaku, a Jonin from Kumogakure who once served in the Kumogakure Anbu long ago."
"I don't recognize the other four, but their strength is likely no higher than Chunin level; you should be able to handle them."
"Once we catch up, if they scatter, you only need to focus on pinning down one of them. There is no need to kill them."
"I will come to assist you as soon as I finish off the others."
Uchiha Mai nodded. That was the extent of his value for now; holding back a stray fish would count as a success.
"One Jonin and four or five Chunin—this is undoubtedly an elite squad."
"Why would such an elite team appear in the heart of the Land of Fire to ambush Princess Tsunade, and why did our Anbu remain completely unaware?"
Uchiha Mai asked while running.
The primary duties of the Anbu were assassination, reconnaissance, preventing foreign enemies from infiltrating Konoha, and rooting out enemy spies within the borders.
"I don't know."
"However, I've grown accustomed to such things. The situation back then was far more absurd than this," Minato remarked with a touch of numbness.
Do tell.
Well, no need for details; Uchiha Mai already knew which incident Minato was referring to.
Kushina, hailing from the Uzumaki Clan, was brought to Konoha to be groomed as the next Nine-Tails Jinchuriki after Uzumaki Mito.
The Uzumaki Clan was proficient in sealing techniques and possessed naturally vast chakra reserves, making them the most suitable candidates to host Tailed Beasts.
The Eight-Tails of Kumogakure was the most powerful Tailed Beast aside from the Nine-Tails.
Their sealing techniques were mediocre at best, and the Eight-Tails Jinchuriki, Blue B, was in such poor physical condition that the Eight-Tails went on a rampage multiple times.
Naturally, Kumogakure set its sights on Kushina, dispatching ninjas deep into Konoha to kidnap her.
Had young Minato not tracked her down by following the red hair she tore out, the Eight-Tails Jinchuriki of Kumogakure might not have been Killer B.
Similar incidents occurred in the original plot as well, such as when a Kumogakure delegation kidnapped Hinata. When Hyuga Hiashi killed the kidnappers in pursuit, Kumogakure refused to let it go, forcing the village to push Hizashi Hyuga out as a scapegoat.
It was truly absurd, making Konoha seem like the Land of Light—a place anyone could stroll through, less secure than a public restroom.
"By the way, Mai, you saved Princess Tsunade immediately, so you must have sensed the ambush early on."
"How did you discover them?"
With time to spare, Master Minato asked, treating it as a test for his disciple.
Uchiha Mai struggled to keep pace with Minato while answering: "The road we took ran east-west, and the trees beside the road were oriented north-south."
"During the day, the sun rises in the east, reaches the south at noon, and sets in the west in the evening."
"In the wild, the sun-facing side of a tree is always more lush due to photosynthesis; it's an unavoidable law of nature."
"I noticed that a tree by the road had denser foliage on its shaded side, so I suspected someone might be using a Transformation Technique to ambush us, which made me more vigilant."
The enemies were just too dim-witted.
I see, Namikaze Minato nodded slightly. It's the same reason I used to determine there was an ambush. This kid has a bright future.
The two exchanged words as they sprinted through the forest, closing in on the enemies' trail.
After about half an hour of travel, Namikaze Minato suddenly stopped, his brows furrowed as if he had discovered something.
"What is it?" Uchiha Mai asked.
"I don't think we need to chase them anymore." Namikaze Minato's gaze turned grave as he pulled a Kunai from his pouch and hurled it at an ancient tree twenty meters away.
"Clang!"
Just as the Kunai was about to strike, the ancient tree suddenly transformed back into the shape of the middle-aged ninja, who swatted the weapon away. It was none other than the Kumogakure Jonin who had led the ambush on Princess Tsunade: Narita Daisaku.
"Clap, clap, clap..."
Forced to reveal his form, Narita Daisaku remained calm, smiling as he applauded: "As expected of Namikaze Minato, one of the most outstanding ninjas of Konoha's younger generation."
"You detected our ambush with such ease."
"I won't make the same mistake twice," Master Minato replied coldly.
Another ambush?
Uchiha Mai narrowed his eyes. After a moment of thought, he deduced the likely truth.
After the assassination failed, Narita Daisaku had decisively led his team to flee. As a Jonin of Kumogakure, he must have realized shortly after escaping that there was something strange about Tsunade's physical condition.
The fact that Princess Tsunade of Konoha suffered from a psychological disorder that severely crippled her combat power was news that could shock the entire ninja world. If they didn't make it public but instead used this secret to bargain with Konoha, they could certainly extort a great deal of profit.
Narita Daisaku bet that Namikaze Minato wouldn't let him take that secret back to Kumogakure. At the same time, out of greed, he hadn't fled with his full effort, opting instead to set another ambush to take out the pursuing Minato.
Narita Daisaku glanced at Uchiha Mai and frowned: "There is one more pursuer than I anticipated, but it doesn't matter. A brat like this won't change the outcome."
"Five against two—we still have the upper hand."
"Brat, if you want to blame someone, blame Namikaze Minato. If he hadn't brought you along on this pursuit, you wouldn't have had to die."
"Numbers do not determine the strength of an enemy. Just as a gathering of rabbits is no match for a tiger, the same applies here."
"My teacher is Namikaze Minato. Before we arrived, he said himself that he could take on twenty of you with one hand tied behind his back. I just need to cheer him on and witness him perform a miracle."
My teacher would eat sh*t! .jpg
Uchiha Mai retorted to Narita Daisaku with ease, conveniently drawing a wave of aggro for Master Minato.
As soon as these words left his mouth, the way Narita Daisaku looked at Master Minato turned instantly hostile. Children shouldn't lie, so this Namikaze Minato must be incredibly arrogant.
Namikaze Minato: "..."
I didn't, I wasn't, he's making it all up!
At this point in time, Namikaze Minato had not yet mastered the Flying Thunder God or the Rasengan, those god-tier skills for crushing weaklings.
The enemy was a Jingying Squad led by a Cloud Jonin. Master Minato believed he could win, but it wouldn't be easy; he would still need to go all out and fight a bloody battle.
How did I become so formidable in your mouth?
"Go get them, Teacher Minato! It's time to show them what real strength is!"
Uchiha Mai drew even more aggro for Master Minato before silently retreating a short distance.
Aside from Narita Daisaku, who had revealed himself, there were four Chunin hidden in the shadows. Charging into the fray recklessly was too dangerous.
It would be more practical to wait until Master Minato started fighting them, then enter the battlefield as an assassin.
