| Eight Inner Gates — First Gate: Space Gate | 11 | Opened during his spar with Uchiha Mai after refusing to concede despite a head injury. The gate removes bodily limitations, sharply increasing his speed and strength at a heavy physical cost. 11 |
Background / History
Guy grew up as the son of Might Duy, a genin whose lack of ninjutsu talent led other Konoha ninja to dismiss him. Sharing that limitation, Guy was also discriminated against by classmates and committed himself to proving that taijutsu alone could create a powerful ninja. Duy remained his idol and taught him the Eight Inner Gates. 3
At the Ninja Academy, Guy was one of the few boys with a decent relationship with Uchiha Mai. Seeing Mai use a carefully structured boxing stance during the latter’s fight with Asuma, Guy became overwhelmed with excitement: to him, Mai’s taijutsu validated his belief that taijutsu was not merely for those unable to use ninjutsu. 2 3
After repeatedly challenging Mai, Guy brought him to meet Duy when Mai expressed interest in nintaijutsu and kicking techniques. Guy later sparred Mai by the river so Duy could observe Mai’s style. Although Mai initially knocked him down, Guy reopened the match by activating the first of the Eight Inner Gates. 9 10 11
Guy ultimately lost to Mai’s Cross Armbreaker, but immediately set himself an extreme new training regimen rather than becoming discouraged. He and Mai subsequently agreed to train together under Duy’s guidance. 13
Following the Academy selection test, Guy became one of Namikaze Minato’s students alongside Mai and Kakashi. 20 21
Appearance
Guy wears an eccentric green spandex suit and is immediately recognizable by his highly distinctive hairstyle and facial features. 5
Personality
Guy is intensely emotional, earnest, and direct. He cries openly when moved by friendship, family, recognition of taijutsu, or personal resolve; he and Duy frequently share emotional outbursts. 5 9
He is relentlessly determined in combat. Even after suffering a severe blow from Mai’s Iron Hammer, he refused to accept defeat, opened the Space Gate, and continued fighting. 11
Guy approaches rivalry as a source of mutual improvement. After losing to Mai, he set harsher daily goals for himself; Duy notes that once Guy chooses a rival, he will persist until he surpasses them. 13
His sincerity can become impractical. During Kakashi’s hostage exercise, Guy took Mai’s rhetoric about sacrificing himself for the mission literally and tried to force his own throat against Kakashi’s blade. 28
Abilities & Skills
Taijutsu
Guy specializes in taijutsu and has little aptitude for ninjutsu. His combat style emphasizes powerful, aggressive punches and kicks, especially aerial and whipping kicks. 3 10 20
- Could threaten Kakashi in pure taijutsu after training for roughly a year. 22
- Pressured Mai with a continuous barrage of punches and kicks after opening the Space Gate. 11 12
- Uses kicks as his primary offensive option, though Mai exploited the openings created by Guy’s airborne attacks. 10 11
- His early fighting style is straightforward and head-on, leaving him vulnerable to more tactical opponents. 11
Eight Inner Gates
Guy inherited the Eight Inner Gates from Might Duy and could activate the first gate, the Space Gate, by age eight. 3 11
- Unlocks the body’s normal limitations, allowing him to exert greater strength and speed. 11
- The resulting physical boost erased Mai’s prior advantage in combat intelligence and made direct exchanges untenable for Mai. 11
- Greatly accelerates stamina consumption and places serious strain on the user’s body. 11
- At this stage, Guy was believed capable of opening no more than the first or second gate. 11
Training Discipline
Guy’s greatest asset is his extreme work ethic. He treats arduous physical training as the path by which an ordinary ninja can surpass natural geniuses and bloodline users. 13
- Responded to defeat by adding an extra 100 kilometers of running, 1,000 push-ups, 1,000 sit-ups, and 1,000 tree kicks to his routine. 13
- Regularly performs energetic conditioning drills, including frog jumps around a lake. 26
- His diligence and taijutsu talent were praised by Mai as potentially sufficient to make him a future jonin. 20
Equipment / Items
- Green spandex suit — Guy’s characteristic training attire. 5 26
- Tsunade poster — A poster treasured by Duy, entrusted to Guy so he could seek Tsunade’s autograph during Minato’s mission to retrieve her. 35
Relationships
- Might Duy — Father, taijutsu mentor, and personal idol. Guy deeply values Duy’s recognition and inherited the Eight Inner Gates from him. 3 9 11
- Uchiha Mai — Academy acquaintance, rival, training partner, and later teammate. Guy admired Mai’s taijutsu, repeatedly challenged him, and continued pursuing him as a benchmark after defeat. 3 5 13 21
- Hatake Kakashi — Rival and teammate under Minato. Guy had pursued challenges against Kakashi since meeting him and improved rapidly through that rivalry. 21 22
- Namikaze Minato — Jonin instructor. Minato accepted Guy as his student after Mai argued for Guy’s potential and later assigned him to protect Tsunade during the team’s first A-rank mission. 20 21 42
- Tsunade — Subject of Guy’s first A-rank mission; he was tasked with guarding her and carried Duy’s poster to request an autograph. 35 42
Story Role / Major Arcs
Ninja Academy Rivalry
Guy recognizes the sophistication of Mai’s boxing stance during Mai’s match with Asuma and loudly defends taijutsu’s value before their classmates. 3 He later challenges Mai himself, but Mai initially avoids the match with a fabricated excuse involving Shisui’s birthday. 5
Training Under Might Duy
Guy introduces Mai to Duy, hoping that Mai’s interest in taijutsu will validate his father’s abilities. 9 He spars Mai during Duy’s evaluation, activates the Space Gate after being knocked down, and ultimately loses to Mai’s Cross Armbreaker. 10 11 13
Minato’s Team Selection
Guy survives Mai’s ruthless elimination of the other candidates and is selected as one of Minato’s students. Mai’s argument that Guy’s talent and effort surpassed the other candidates’ secures his place on the team. 20 21
Alarm Clock Exercise
During Minato’s team exercise, Kakashi defeats and restrains Guy before using him as leverage against Mai. Guy is prepared to sacrifice himself for the team objective, while Mai negotiates for Kakashi to stabilize his injuries. 27 28 Minato declares Mai and Guy the winners after Mai defeats Kakashi. 31
Retrieval of Tsunade
Guy joins Minato, Mai, and Kakashi on their first A-rank mission to retrieve Tsunade. He is assigned to remain with Kakashi and guard Tsunade while Minato and Mai pursue fleeing enemies. 35 42 Following the mission, Minato awards Guy 150,000 ryo for his meritorious guard duty. 48
