Background / History

Hongjun resided on Jade Capital Mountain before becoming the Dao Ancestor. Hao Tian and Yao Chi served as his attendants there. When Yun Xiao disciplined the two and removed the mountain’s Spiritual Roots, Hongjun returned to find them injured and their courtyard emptied; at that time, he had not yet merged with the Heavenly Dao and still displayed personal surprise and concern 31.

He possessed fragments of the Jade Butterfly of Creation, which enabled exceptionally rapid comprehension of Heavenly Dao laws and divine abilities. When the Heavenly Dao summoned him, he prepared to enter Fate River Space, but the outbreak of the Dragon-Han Tribulation delayed this step 89.

During the tribulation, Yang Mei, Yun Xiao, and numerous Innate Gods and Demons confined Hongjun within a universe prison around Jade Capital Mountain. Even while trapped, he manifested Heavenly Dao authority, formed a rival universe, and nearly shattered the prison himself 90 91. After the prison was withdrawn, he fought Luohu for the position of Heavenly Dao spokesperson. Supported by the Heavenly Dao and armed with the Taiji Diagram and Pangu Banner, Hongjun eventually prevailed; he teleported Luohu’s self-destruction to the West, devastating most of the region and incurring immense Western karma 92 93.

The ensuing merit elevated Hongjun to Primordial Sainthood. He then merged himself with the Heavenly Dao in order to perfect it and announced a sermon at Purple Cloud Palace for all fated cultivators 93 95.

Appearance

Hongjun is generally depicted as an ethereal Daoist with a calm, detached bearing. He often sits cross-legged upon a Lotus Platform while preaching or wielding Heavenly Dao authority 99 104.

• His expression is frequently described as neither joyful nor sorrowful after merging with the Heavenly Dao 99 125.
• His presence can manifest as a vast white radiance capable of overwhelming the surrounding world 90 114.

Personality

Before his full integration with the Heavenly Dao, Hongjun could be measured and calculating, but retained recognizable personal reactions. He cared for Hao Tian and Yao Chi, rewarded them after his breakthrough, and used tact rather than force to defuse Gong Gong and Zhu Rong’s confrontation at Purple Cloud Palace 31 93 99.

As the Heavenly Dao’s influence deepened, he became increasingly impersonal. He spoke of maintaining the Primordial Era’s order, treated his proclamations as law, and repeatedly framed actions as being “in accordance with the will of heaven” 107 125. Brief moments of internal struggle nevertheless surfaced during his conflict with Yun Xiao, suggesting that his original will remained constrained rather than wholly erased 115 116.

Hongjun is also highly pragmatic in battle. He moved Luohu’s self-destruction to the West to limit broader destruction, though the decision ruined much of the Western Land, and he later manipulated events surrounding the Demon Race for purposes not fully explained in the available account 93 158.

Jade Capital Mountain

Hongjun is introduced as the formidable master of Jade Capital Mountain, whose reputation alone deters Yun Xiao from acting rashly around Hao Tian and Yao Chi 30. His return reveals his early connection to the two attendants and establishes the mountain as his domain 31.

Dragon-Han Tribulation and Dao–Demon Conflict

Hongjun’s planned entry into the Heavenly Dao is delayed by the Dragon-Han Tribulation. He survives the combined imprisonment effort of Yun Xiao, Yang Mei, and the Innate Gods and Demons, then defeats Luohu in the final struggle for the Heavenly Dao spokesperson position 89 90 91 92.

First Primordial Saint

After Luohu’s defeat, Hongjun gains merit, becomes the first Primordial Saint, and merges with the Heavenly Dao. He then convenes the Purple Cloud Palace sermon to shape the next generation of powerful cultivators 93 95 98.

Purple Cloud Palace Sermons

Hongjun preaches to the gathered great cultivators, elevates Gong Gong and Zhu Rong to his side to settle a dispute, teaches the Three-Corpse method, and chooses disciples to help govern the Primordial Era 99 104 107. He distributes Hongmeng Purple Qi and major spiritual treasures, consolidating his influence over the emerging Saint candidates 108.

Conflict with Yun Xiao and the Human Dao

Hongjun confronts Yun Xiao after she asserts control over the Ancient Heavenly Court and protects Star Ancestor. Although he overwhelms her through Heavenly Dao authority, Yun Xiao’s defiance inspires the first manifestation of the Human Dao Divine Wheel; their battle ends in a mutual draw and exposes that neither Hongjun nor the Heavenly Dao is invincible 113 114 115.

Hongjun later opposes Yun Xiao’s intervention in Xi He’s Heavenly Marriage and attempts to prevent the Human Race’s creation. Yun Xiao suppresses him with nine Chaos Spiritual Treasures, creates the Human Race, and eventually destroys his physical body after awakening the Human Dao 125 126 129 130.

Reincarnation Plan and Final Defeat

After his apparent death, Hongjun’s consciousness briefly returns long enough to send Yun Xiao a message. He leaves his good and evil corpse clones with Hao Tian and Yao Chi, intending to reincarnate, recultivate through the Three-Corpse method, and escape the Heavenly Dao’s control 130 132.

The Heavenly Dao reconstructs Hongjun’s body, though with much of his intellect consumed. He later reaches Nirvana-level Dao Ancestor status and fights Houtu as the Earth Dao rises against the Heavenly Dao. Houtu ultimately obliterates him through a Pangu True Body evolved from the Netherworld 133 157 160.
