Zhang Tianshou initially presents herself as a young woman of the Zhang Clan of Qinghe, using the title “First Madam” rather than freely giving her personal name. Privately, she considers herself an ancestor from an older generation of that clan; the clan genealogy traces its ancestry to Jade Emperor Zhang Bairen. 3 4

Her true position is the Eldest Princess of the Heavenly Court. She and her sisters descend to the mortal realm to play while concealing their identities. Unlike her sisters, Tianshou is more conscious of the constraints imposed by heavenly law, including the prohibition on relationships between immortals and mortals. 7 11
