Background / History
Sannin Duties and Return to Konoha
Jiraiya is dispatched alongside Orochimaru and Tsunade to investigate the attack on Kakashi and capture Hiruko 3. He is also the teacher of Minato Namikaze and the three Land of Rain disciples—Yahiko, Konan, and Nagato 15 93.
Following the Nine-Tails Incident, Minato’s letter reassures him that Minato and Kushina survived. When he eventually returns to Konoha, he learns that Takuya saved Kushina by splitting and resealing the Nine-Tails, and that Orochimaru’s human experiments have been exposed. Distressed by his old friend’s defection, Jiraiya privately resolves to track Orochimaru down and attempt to bring him back 94.
War Against Kumogakure
With Minato initially required to remain in Konoha, Jiraiya becomes the principal commander available for the Kumogakure front. Minato asks him to protect Takuya, who is joining the rear medical unit. Before departing, Jiraiya bows to Takuya in gratitude for saving Kushina 93 94 95.
At the battlefield, Jiraiya summons Gamabunta to intimidate the enemy and raise Konoha’s morale. After witnessing Takuya’s treatment of critically wounded shinobi, he appoints him acting deputy commander of the medical division. He later grants Takuya leave during a lull in the fighting 95 96 102.
Renewed fighting leaves Jiraiya unable to prepare Sage Mode while containing the Fourth Raikage and supporting enemy jonin. Although suspicious of the Collector—the thief of Konoha’s Scroll of Seals—he accepts the masked fighter’s paid assistance. The Collector takes responsibility for Killer B, allowing Jiraiya to withdraw and complete his transformation 115 116.
In Sage Mode, Jiraiya relieves Shisui and overwhelms the Fourth Raikage, nearly killing him. Killer B escapes with his brother and threatens to fire a Tailed Beast Bomb into the battlefield if pursued. Jiraiya abandons the chase rather than risk mass casualties, securing Konoha’s victory without forcing mutual destruction 119 120 122 123.
Search for Tsunade
After the war, Jiraiya proposes access to Tsunade’s medical instruction as a suitable reward for Takuya. He accompanies Takuya in searching for her, gathering leads through taverns and brothels before locating her with Shizune 126 129 130 131.
Jiraiya hopes to reconnect Tsunade with Konoha, but she resists renewed ties to the village. She instead offers Takuya her accumulated medical knowledge and secret techniques in scroll form. After she departs without saying goodbye, Jiraiya also resumes his wandering life, having already informed Minato of his plans 132 134.
Orochimaru and Akatsuki Intelligence
Jiraiya later returns while pursuing Orochimaru’s trail. His warning letter alerts Minato that Orochimaru may be planning something during the Chunin Exam. Intelligence he gathers about Akatsuki—including the background of its Jashin-worshipping immortal member—is subsequently shared at the Five Kage Summit 259 275.
After the Five Great Ninja Villages form an alliance, Jiraiya returns with Tsunade and learns that Akatsuki’s Rinnegan-wielding leader is Nagato. He had previously searched unsuccessfully for his Rain disciples and assumed they had died in war. Studying portraits of the Pain Six Paths, he recognizes Yahiko and other shinobi he once encountered, confirming that Nagato is controlling corpses 288 289.
Confrontation with Nagato
During the Allied Forces’ assault, Jiraiya appeals to Nagato and Konan to stop the bloodshed. Nagato responds that Yahiko’s faith in negotiation led him into an ambush arranged by Hanzo and Danzō, where he sacrificed himself to protect his friends 295.
Jiraiya had refused Minato’s Flying Thunder God kunai because he believed this confrontation was his responsibility alone. Deva Path uses Universal Pull to seize him and Black Receivers to severely wound him and disrupt his chakra. Minato’s initial rescue attempt is repelled, but he subsequently transports Jiraiya to the medical camp 295 296.
Tsunade overcomes her hemophobia to treat him. Although incapacitated, Jiraiya remains concerned about Nagato and the war’s outcome 296.
Appearance
- Normal appearance: Tall and burly, with distinctive spiky white hair, conspicuous face paint, and an often unkempt, travel-worn appearance 94 95.
- Sage Mode eyes: Frog-like eyes with horizontal pupils and orange-red markings around the eyelids 119.
- Sage Mode features: A broad, flattened nose; dark facial bumps; rough, wart-covered skin; webbed fingers and toes; and sharp nails 119.
- Sage Mode build: Enlarged, knotted muscles, with Fukasaku and Shima positioned on his shoulders and back 119.
Personality
Jiraiya is loud, theatrical, and unabashedly free-spirited. He introduces himself with an exaggerated stage performance, barges into Takuya’s office without ceremony, and openly celebrates mixed bathing. His drunken behavior and pleasure-seeking frequently frustrate the more restrained Takuya 95 111 129 130 131.
His frivolity often conceals genuine grief. After learning about Orochimaru’s experiments, he suppresses his distress behind a hearty grin rather than burden others with it. His gratitude toward Takuya is equally sincere: he rejects the idea that risking one’s life to save Kushina was merely an obligation 94 95.
As a commander, he places the village above personal pride. He negotiates with a known thief when Konoha needs help, acknowledges talented subordinates, and restrains his desire to pursue the Raikage when doing so would endanger his troops 96 115 116 122.
His attachment to former companions and students also makes him prone to self-blame. Orochimaru’s defection and Nagato’s transformation both lead him to question what he overlooked or failed to prevent. His insistence on facing Nagato without Minato’s teleportation safeguard leaves him vulnerable during their confrontation 94 288 289 295.
Abilities & Skills
Sage Mode
Mount Myōboku’s Sage Mode enhances Jiraiya’s physical power, chakra, perception, and ninjutsu across the board 119.
- Strength and speed: Meets the Raikage’s charging strike from a stationary stance, then overtakes him during his retreat 119.
- Perception: Observes distant battlefield details and reads the Raikage’s chakra flow and attack trajectory 119.
- Support: Fukasaku and Shima assist in gathering and balancing Natural Energy 113 119.
- Preparation limit: Requires a lengthy, uninterrupted gathering period, making activation difficult under continuous attack 109 115 116.
- Efficiency limit: His imperfect transformation reduces Sage Chakra conversion efficiency 119.
- Duration limit: Even with both sages assisting, the transformation places a heavy burden on him and cannot be maintained for long 113 119.
Hair-Based Ninjutsu
- Sage Art: Hair Needle Senbon: Animates and expands his white hair into a mass of needle-like projectiles. Some penetrate the Fourth Raikage’s defenses 119 120.
- Sage Art: Wild Lion’s Mane Technique: Uses living, chakra-infused hair to restrain and counter the Raikage’s arms during close combat 120.
Rasengan
- Sage Art: Rasengan: Produces a denser, more radiant sphere than an ordinary Rasengan and meets the Raikage’s enhanced attack head-on 120.
- Sage Art: Big Ball Rasengan: Used against the Raikage’s final lightning armor during the concluding exchange 120.
Toad Summoning
- Gamabunta: Summons a giant toad whose arrival serves both battlefield intimidation and morale support 95.
- Fukasaku and Shima: Summons the two Mount Myōboku sages to support his Sage Mode and provide battlefield advice 119 122.
Intelligence Gathering
- Maintains an intelligence reach extending throughout the ninja world 93.
- Uses taverns and brothels to sift rumors from patrons; during the Tsunade search, he specifically follows leads from people spending gambling winnings 130.
- Tracks Orochimaru and warns Minato of his return before the Chunin Exam crisis 259.
- Supplies intelligence on Akatsuki’s immortal Jashin follower 275.
- Identifies several Pain bodies through memories of earlier missions and wartime encounters 289.
Battlefield Command
- Recognizes Takuya’s medical value and places him in a senior field-hospital role 96.
- Considers both an unidentified third force and possible injuries to Yugito when analyzing Kumogakure’s retreat 101 102.
- Reassigns opponents among Konoha’s elite to create the opening needed for Sage Mode 115 116.
- Redirects Shisui to support Ino-Shika-Cho after taking over the Raikage battle 119.
Relationships
- Minato Namikaze — Prized student and Fourth Hokage. Minato relies on his command and intelligence work, while Jiraiya advises him on personnel and village affairs. Minato later rescues him from Pain 93 94 125 126 296.
- Minamoto Takuya — Respected colleague and wartime subordinate. Jiraiya thanks him for saving Kushina, promotes him in the medical division, and arranges the search for Tsunade to further his medical training 95 96 126 129.
- The Collector — Suspicious but useful transactional ally. Jiraiya hires him despite his theft of the Scroll of Seals. Seeing his Adamantine Sealing Chains, Jiraiya wonders whether he is an Uzumaki survivor; the supplied passages do not show him identifying the Collector as Takuya 116 119 122.
- Tsunade — Fellow Sannin and longtime comrade for whom he has unspoken romantic feelings. She regards him as a reliable companion but remains attached to Dan’s memory. She later overcomes her fear of blood to save him 131 296.
- Orochimaru — Fellow Sannin and close friend from his youth. His defection causes Jiraiya deep disappointment, but Jiraiya still hopes to retrieve him from his destructive path 94 259.

- Shisui Uchiha — Young shinobi whose courage and loyalty earn his strong approval. Jiraiya supports Minato’s proposal to make Shisui the Uchiha representative 115 119 125.
- Fukasaku and Shima — Trusted Sage Mode partners. Their willingness to enter a human war for his sake moves him, and he relies on their support and warnings 119 122.
- A, the Fourth Raikage — Major wartime opponent. Jiraiya nearly kills him in Sage Mode but ultimately permits his escape rather than expose Konoha’s troops to Killer B’s retaliation 119 120 122 123.
