History
Yahiko's Death and the Outer Path
Nagato was one of Akatsuki's surviving core members alongside Yahiko and Konan when Hanzō ambushed the organization. Hanzō captured Konan and forced Nagato to choose between killing Yahiko or allowing her to die. Yahiko resolved the dilemma himself by impaling his own heart on Nagato's kunai. 17
The shock drove Nagato to unleash the Rinnegan. He repelled the Rain Ninja's attacks, shielded Konan from an explosion, summoned the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, and used its Chakra Dragon against his enemies. The battle destroyed his legs and nearly exhausted his chakra, but it also marked the beginning of his descent into grief-driven violence. 17 18
Akatsuki's Leader
Nagato eventually ruled Akatsuki as Pain from within Amegakure. He controlled the village-wide Rain Tiger at Will Technique through the Deva Path, infusing the region's rainfall with chakra to detect intruders. 252
He adopted the plan presented by “Madara” to collect all nine Tailed Beasts, seal their chakra into the Demonic Statue, and create a weapon powerful enough to force the world into peace. However, Minamoto Takuya's revelations about the Rinnegan's origin caused Nagato to question whether his eyes, his suffering, and Akatsuki's entire mission had been arranged by others. 253 254
Despite those doubts, Nagato continued Akatsuki's campaign. He planned to seize the Eight-Tails at the Five Kage Summit and implied that the Nine-Tails had already been secured, demonstrating a growing independence from Obito's control. 272 288
Fourth Shinobi World War
As Deva Path Pain, Nagato confronted Minato Namikaze with all six Paths. Their shared vision allowed the bodies to track Minato's teleportation routes, while Deva Path employed Universal Pull and Shinra Tensei against him. 281 282
After the Ten-Tails' evolution, Nagato absorbed it himself rather than allowing Madara or Obito to claim its power. He became a Ten-Tails jinchūriki and proclaimed his intention to end war and pain through a new world order under his authority. 308 309
Black Zetsu later captured Konan and forced Nagato to revive Madara and surrender his power. Knowing that Madara had manipulated his life and owned the Rinnegan, Nagato nevertheless used the Outer Path: Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique to restore the fallen, sacrificing his life force for Konan's survival. 314
In his final struggle, Nagato removed both Rinnegan and scattered them across the battlefield to create an opening for Konan's escape. Konan carried his dying body away from the battle. 315 Nagato later appeared within Kaguya's Consciousness Space, entrusted Konan to Minamoto Takuya, and merged his power with him. 355
Appearance
Nagato's appearance changes drastically as the cost of the Rinnegan and his later Six Paths power reshape his body.
- Red hair during Akatsuki's early years. 17
- Crippled legs after protecting Konan during Hanzō's explosion attack. 17
- Emaciated body, with withered limbs, sunken eye sockets, pale skin, and prominent bones while sustaining the Rinnegan. 252 254
- Rinnegan, marked by concentric purple ripples. 253
- Six Paths form with white hair, a white magatama-patterned robe, black staff, and nine Truth-Seeking Orbs after becoming the Ten-Tails jinchūriki. 308
Personality
Nagato's defining conviction is his desire for peace, inherited from Yahiko but transformed by trauma into a belief that peace must be imposed through overwhelming pain. He is capable of cold detachment as Pain, treating allies' deaths and setbacks as necessary costs toward the final objective. 287 290
His ruthlessness does not erase his attachment to those closest to him. Yahiko's death destabilizes him completely, and Konan remains the person he refuses to lose. His fear for her safety ultimately outweighs his power, ideals, and life. 17 314 315
Nagato also retains traces of the compassion he held before becoming Pain. He gives Jiraiya opportunities to retreat from Amegakure rather than immediately killing his former teacher, and he grows increasingly resistant to Obito and Black Zetsu's attempts to treat him as a disposable pawn. 256 288
Abilities & Skills
Rinnegan
Nagato wields Madara Uchiha's Rinnegan, eyes powerful enough to control the Six Paths and the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. Their power comes at the cost of his health and life force. 254 314
- Repels attacks and opponents with Shinra Tensei. 17 262
- Draws targets in with Universal Pull. 281
- Controls multiple bodies through chakra receiver rods and a shared field of vision. 281 285
- Sustains the Pain Six Paths and remotely operates Yahiko's corpse as Deva Path. 289
- Cannot use the Rinnegan without severe physical strain; repeated use leaves him increasingly frail. 18 254
Pain Six Paths
Nagato controls six orange-haired corpses fitted with black chakra receivers. Each bears the Rinnegan and contributes to a near-blind-spot-free shared vision network. 281 285
- Deva Path — uses attraction and repulsion techniques, including Universal Pull and Shinra Tensei. 281
- Shared vision — allows the Paths to react to Minato's movements and cover likely Flying Thunder God positions. 281 282
- Distributed combat — lets Nagato attack through multiple bodies while remaining away from the immediate battlefield. 282
Outer Path
The Rinnegan's Outer Path grants Nagato control over the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path and life-and-death techniques.
- Summons the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. 17
- Releases the statue's Chakra Dragon as an attack. 17 18
- Uses Outer Path: Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique to revive the fallen, including Allied Shinobi Forces members and Madara. 314
- The resurrection technique rapidly drains his life force and ages him. 314
Rain Tiger at Will Technique
Through Deva Path Pain, Nagato infuses Amegakure's rain with chakra, turning rainfall across the village into a sensory network. 252
- Detects disturbances entering the rain's range. 252
- Relies on the Land of Rain's constant rainfall to remain sustainable. 252
Six Paths Ten-Tails Power
After absorbing the Ten-Tails, Nagato becomes a Six Paths-level combatant whose chakra surpasses the limits of ordinary shinobi. 308
- Gains a black staff and nine Truth-Seeking Orbs. 308
- Endures the Allied Shinobi Forces' combined assault and the Tenkyo Shinsei. 309
- Uses Six Paths defenses to repel the Allied Forces' attacks. 311
- Creates a protective barrier around Konan while drawing enemy attention toward himself. 309
- His Truth-Seeking Orb defenses are vulnerable to Black Zetsu's interference, which he fails to anticipate. 314
