Power Progression

Minamoto Takuya’s own Rinnegan advances separately from Madara’s eyes, which pass through several other wielders.

Background and History

The Rinnegan is associated with the Sage of Six Paths, but it can also arise through the evolution of Sharingan. Takuya identifies the union of Indra’s and Asura’s chakra as the means of drawing out Six Paths power and awakening his own eyes. He initially refuses Nagato’s offer of his Rinnegan: transplanted eyes cannot readily be deactivated, may not grant their original wielder’s unique technique, and would attract Obito and the Zetsu 19 211 231.

Nagato’s Rinnegan originally belonged to Madara. Their use steadily drains Nagato’s life force, even as he relies on them to pursue the peace he and Yahiko envisioned. After learning their likely origin, Nagato comes to see the eyes as part of a plan in which he was intended to be a vessel rather than their true owner 253 254.

During the war, Nagato removes both eyes and throws them onto the battlefield. Obito seizes one, while Minato takes the other. Minato’s recovered eye is given to Sasuke, whose chakra reacts violently to it. Takuya attributes that compatibility to Sasuke and Madara being successive reincarnations of Indra 315 316 317 318.

Appearance

The ordinary Rinnegan displays purple concentric ripples. More advanced forms add black tomoe; Takuya’s left eye progresses from three to six and finally nine 241 269 281 359.

Abilities & Skills

Attraction and repulsion

• Universal Pull draws targets toward the user. Moving a vast quantity of rock with it overtaxes Nagato and causes him to collapse 19.
• Shinra Tensei releases repulsive force. Deva Path Pain uses it to scatter Minato and his kunai, while Takuya uses his Six-Tomoe Rinnegan to halt the rampaging Ten-Tails 282 298.

The Six Paths and shared vision

• Nagato controls six bodies bearing the appearance of the Rinnegan. Their linked fields of vision let them coordinate defenses and counterattacks against Minato’s rapid movements 281 282.
• The Paths have distinct abilities, including the Preta Path’s absorption of chakra and ninjutsu. Unlike Dark Release, that absorption does not let its user convert and reuse an opponent’s technique as a counterattack 108 282.
• Outer Path: Samsara of Heavenly Life revives the dead. Nagato’s use of it rapidly drains and ages him 314.

Wielder-specific ocular powers

• Limbo: Border Jail belongs to Madara’s Rinnegan; Nagato cannot use it simply by possessing Madara’s transplanted eyes. Madara produces one invisible shadow with a single Rinnegan and four after recovering both 19 342 345.
• Takuya’s unique Rinnegan dōjutsu enhances his abilities according to the strength of his Yin Release 361.
• Takuya’s Three-Tomoe Rinnegan preserves access to his Mangekyō techniques without switching eye forms 241.

Connection to the Ten-Tails

• Takuya uses his Three-Tomoe Rinnegan to connect with the Little Ten-Tails’ consciousness and force its transformation 245.
• He considers the Rinnegan an ideal intermediary for containing the Ten-Tails because its power shares an origin with that of the God Tree 231.
• Possession does not guarantee complete control: the transplanted eyes exhaust Nagato, and Takuya judges that a non-native Rinnegan may not provide its original owner’s exclusive ability 19 254.
