Background / History

Hiruzen Sarutobi served as Konoha’s Third Hokage and was regarded as a peak powerhouse. He could use seven chakra natures, had mastered Konoha’s ninjutsu, and bore the title “Professor of Ninjutsu.” 2

During the Uchiha clan extermination, Hiruzen watched the burning compound alongside Danzō and mourned his failure to protect the legacy of the First and Second Hokage. He questioned whether the massacre was truly the best outcome for Konoha. 2 4

After Sasuke pleaded for Yu’s life, Hiruzen sensed faint consciousness within Yu’s apparently dead body. He used a Konoha secret technique to save him, then took both Yu and Sasuke away despite Danzō’s demand to keep Yu. 4 5 He later protected Yu from Danzō’s direct interference while maintaining surveillance over him through Yamashiro Aoba. 18 37

Following Danzō’s death, Hiruzen publicly announced Danzō’s involvement in the Uchiha extermination and human experimentation. He then abdicated, declaring that Konoha needed a new Hokage. 118 He formally transferred Konoha’s authority, secrets, and the Scroll of Seals to Yuyou after Yuyou became Fifth Hokage. 139 140

Hiruzen’s opposition to Yuyou’s handling of the Tailed Beasts led to his house arrest.
