Background / History

Hiruzen serves as Konoha’s Third Hokage during a period of escalating war with the Sand Ninja. The prolonged stalemate and battlefield casualties leave him exhausted, yet he still personally attends the Genin graduation examinations and later orders the newest graduates to prepare for frontline deployment within two days. 9 11

He had already tolerated Hatake Shudan’s lesser offenses because of the boy’s extraordinary medical talent, but Shudan’s experimentation on injured patients, animals, and ninja dogs repeatedly tests his patience. Hiruzen investigates these incidents personally, disciplines both Shudan and Hatake Sakumo after the White Wolf Maru incident, and assigns Shudan as a Genin captain partly to hold him accountable. 1 2 13

Concerned that Senju Nawaki’s poor battlefield awareness would get him killed, Hiruzen insists on placing him in Shudan’s squad despite Shudan’s objections. He ultimately accepts Shudan’s demand to replace a teammate with Namikaze Minato and increase the team’s medical supplies, prioritizing Nawaki’s survival and development over the original assignment. 14

That patience has limits. Shudan’s reckless potions, public humiliation of other students, and abuse of White Wolf Maru repeatedly provoke Hiruzen into shouting, slamming his desk, and physically disciplining him. 1 10 13 15

He is also protective of Konoha’s future. He regards the graduating students as the village’s hope, values Minato’s potential, and makes difficult wartime decisions to ensure Nawaki gains experience without being needlessly lost on the battlefield. 11 14
