Background / History

Nawaki is the grandson of the First Hokage, Senju Hashirama, and has been raised under the Third Hokage’s protection. His lineage gives him unusually high Chakra reserves and access to powerful ninjutsu, but also makes his survival on the battlefield a political concern for Konoha. 14 17

During the Genin graduation assessment, Nawaki introduced himself as Konoha’s future Fourth Hokage and wore a white robe marked with the title. He launched two A-rank Earth Release techniques, but his extremely slow hand seals, lack of defensive preparation, and poor combat awareness allowed his opponent to evade both attacks and knock him out after his Chakra was depleted. 11

The Third Hokage assigned Nawaki to Hatake Zhou Duan’s squad for a supply-delivery mission, believing Zhou Duan was capable of managing him. Nawaki immediately challenged Zhou Duan’s authority, but was defeated and forcibly subdued with a reaction-enhancing potion whose severe side effect compelled him to rub himself against a tree. 14 16

Zhou Duan later imposed harsh fundamental training on Nawaki, using Hyuga Hyakusho to repeatedly spar against him while restricting Nawaki’s access to high-rank techniques. Nawaki endured the training for five days and came to regard both Zhou Duan and Hyakusho as close friends despite the punishment. 18

Nawaki is a light-brown-haired, brown-eyed boy who wears a blue pendant necklace and a white robe or cape. 11

Personality

Nawaki is hot-blooded, boastful, and intensely fixated on becoming Hokage. He routinely proclaims his superiority, addresses opponents as nameless weaklings, and treats every battle as a grand stage for his future legend. 11 29

His confidence is undermined by poor battlefield awareness. He initially tries to cast high-rank techniques at close range, ignores retreat orders, and repeatedly seeks direct fights against stronger opponents. 11 19 26 30 However, he is resilient rather than malicious: after Hyakusho effortlessly defeated an opponent Nawaki had struggled against, Nawaki acknowledged his weakness and vowed to become a smarter ninja. 23 24

Nawaki is loyal to his teammates and receptive to harsh lessons once he recognizes their purpose. He accepts Zhou Duan and Hyakusho as friends after their training, worries over Zhou Duan’s injuries, and remains loyal even after Zhou Duan uses him as cover during an explosion. 18 29 31
