Background / History
Lothar served King Llane of Stormwind as a trusted knight and military adviser. When news of the Orc invasion reached Stormwind, he reported directly to Llane, helped weigh the kingdom's response, and was ordered to locate the missing Guardian Medivh at Karazhan 84.
He led one hundred knights to Karazhan and charged the Orc force at its entrance. During the conflict around Medivh, Lothar fought alongside Aegwynn and Khadgar; after Medivh's death, he personally returned Medivh's body to King Llane 85 100 101 112.
Following Llane's death, Lothar became Regent of Stormwind. He declared an emergency, directed the fortification of Goldshire, demanded constant intelligence reports on Orc movements, and promised that Stormwind would not fall to the Orcs 138. He oversaw the city's defense during the siege, organizing mages, archers, reserves, and wall reinforcements while personally dueling Orgrim 151 152 153.
After Stormwind's fall and the evacuation of its people, Lothar reached Lordaeron and urged the human kingdoms to unite. The assembled kings unanimously selected him as Supreme Commander of the Alliance. He accepted only after seeking recognition of Varian Wrynn's future kingship once Stormwind was liberated 162 164.
Personality
Lothar is defined by duty, personal courage, and a strong protective instinct. Llane's death visibly devastates him, yet he continues to govern, seek reinforcements, and defend Stormwind's survivors rather than withdraw from responsibility 138 139.
As a commander, he leads from the front but does not treat soldiers as expendable. He trusts capable subordinates, encourages inexperienced officers such as Thomson, and seeks to develop Garvinrad into a weapon for Stormwind's future 152 200 223. His battlefield judgment favors morale, formation, and strategic objectives over personal glory; during Lordaeron's crisis, he abandons an individual duel with Leiluo to rally the collapsing human lines 283.
Lothar can also be politically forceful. He resists Terenas II when Stormwind's interests and Varian's safety are threatened, and later admits that he arranged Turalyon's defeat to pressure Terenas into opening the Dark Portal. He declares that, without the restraints of his loyalty to Llane and the Urynn line, he could pursue the unification of the human kingdoms himself 232 415.
