Origin
The Devil race was created by an advanced Starry Sky civilization as a tool for producing Devil Fruits. A Devil race member had to be killed to create the corresponding fruit, reducing the race to “livestock raised for slaughter” despite its intelligence 117.
Opposing races later attacked the Devil race breeding base, stole human-experiment data and the method to cultivate the Devil race Mother Body, and fled as self-styled Devil Race Liberators 117. The resulting liberation effort failed to establish lasting stability; subsequent wars, Devil Fruit-user hunts, and atrocities associated with Devil race forces caused immense loss of life throughout the Starry Sky 267.
Biology and Bloodline
- Devil race members commonly possess horns; examples include white, purple, and other horn colors 157 226.
- Their racial power can interfere with or seal Armament Haki, Observation Haki, and similar powers, giving them a major advantage against opponents of comparable level 166.
- Devil race Progenitors cannot suppress an opponent's bloodline power in the same manner 166.
- Devil race bloodline can be implanted into other races through conversion experiments, creating new Devil race members 257.
- Devil Race Bloodline Flames are an evolved form of Devil Fruit power: they awaken abilities without necessarily transforming the user into a Devil 394.
- The bloodline provides longevity; when incorporated into Figo's composite bloodline, it contributed further lifespan enhancement 389.
Devil Fruit Production
Devil Fruits are linked to Devil race members rather than a conventional fruit-bearing tree. Upon an ability user's death, the corresponding power can attach to a fruit and regenerate; artificial Devil Fruits can also be produced by extracting Lineage Factors 104.
Historically, killing a Devil race member was required to create the corresponding Devil Fruit, making the race central to the original production system 117.
Social Structure
| Rank / Group | Description |
|---|---|
| Devil King | Lucifer, the first Devil race member and ancestor of all Devils; his bloodline dominance can be sensed by Devil race members across Flame Star and the Starry Sky 405 |
| Three Great Devil Race Ancestors | The highest Progenitors beneath Lucifer's legacy; Beelzebub was the only male among them 158 |
| Progenitors | High-ranking Devils. Five additional Progenitors had ignited four Flames, placing them above Demon Princes but below the Three Great Ancestors 233 |
| Demon Princes | Powerful descendants of the Ancestors. Their status is generally below Progenitors; nine had ignited four Flames before the central war 233 |
| Direct Bloodline | Members cultivated from an Ancestor's cells; this process can produce tens or hundreds of thousands 158 |
| Mixed Blood | Members naturally conceived by Devil race parents; rarer than Direct Bloodline but not lower in status 158 |
| Demon Generals | Lucifer's agents and servants. At least 72 existed, with some concealed among other races or within Flame Star society 323 |
| Legion Commanders | Military leaders active during the later Flame Star conflict 389 392 |
Notable Abilities
Racial Sealing Power
Devil race members can use a sealing effect resembling an enhanced form of Seastone restraint.
- Can suppress Haki and other non-bloodline powers 166.
- Is comparable in effect to the power demonstrated by Devil race Progenitors 157.
- Makes same-level combat especially dangerous for non-Body King opponents 166.
Bloodline Conversion
Devil race experimentation can transform members of other races into Devils.
- Lucifer's bloodline affects all races, enabling Devil race conversion experiments throughout the Starry Sky 257.
- Converted humans formed part of the later “New Devil race,” whose status and treatment became a major political issue 261.
- Conversion continued during the Flame Star war as the Devil race sought to replenish its numbers 392.
Devil Race Bloodline Flames
Devil race bloodline can be cultivated as Flames.
- Allows the awakening of abilities without a physical Devil transformation 394.
- Became a sought-after but costly resource during the later war, particularly for ability users and Devil race descendants 392.
- Unauthorized cultivation of Devil race bloodlines was banned after the Celestial Dragons' defeat, though preexisting Devil Fruits were exempted 280.
History
Ancient conflict
Ten thousand years before the main events, Lucifer rapidly ignited five Flames and became the strongest being in the Starry Sky. His rise led to a catastrophe involving Devil race forces and a coalition of other races 257.
Twenty Starry Sky powerhouses who had ignited Five Flames fought Lucifer and his thirteen Kings. Lucifer was sealed, while the bloodlines of the thirteen Kings scattered across the Blue Sea 258. Following the battle, surviving forces conducted a purge that nearly eradicated the Devil race and devastated Starry Sky civilization 257.
Return to the Blue Sea
The Devil race later identified the Blue Sea as a place where their cultivation had ceased but where Devil Fruits remained. Giant Demon Yato's death at Figo's hands became a major motive for a retaliatory invasion 196.
Star Demon Yagu led five Flying Ships, hundreds of Devils, and five of Beelzebub's seven Demon Princes against the Blue Sea 196. The invading force consisted of elite Direct Bloodline members; even its weakest members possessed strength comparable to Raul, a former Marine Admiral 198.
The Blue Sea defenders defeated or captured the invasion force. Figo personally overcame multiple Demon Princes and captured Yagu, while many lower-ranking Devils were captured by Marine forces or surrendered 200 201.
Central Star Domain war
After the Blue Sea conflict, Figo entered Devil race politics under the identity of Yifu, interacting with Progenitors and descendants of Hram 226 231. He later urged the Devil race to accelerate its campaign against the Celestial Dragons and consider prisoner exchanges to free Devil race captives or destroy the Demon Suppression Prison 242.
Figo infiltrated the Demon Suppression Prison, defeated its warden Halsten, and ultimately helped free more than 100,000 Devil race prisoners 255 261. He argued that the race required recognition as a “New Devil race” rather than continued persecution for the crimes of Lucifer's ancient followers 261.
Following the Celestial Dragons' defeat, the Devil race was expelled from their planet and planned to migrate to the edge of the East Universe Sea. The cultivation of new Devil race bloodlines was prohibited 280.
Flame Star conflict
The Devil race later fractured over conversion experiments, old grievances, and Lucifer's impending revival. The Holy Demon King's faction established the largest city on Flame Star, ruled through four central cities and the Holy Demon King's Palace 368.
As the conflict escalated, Devil race forces conducted raids, infiltrated Human race institutions, stole Flames and lamp wicks, and converted civilians to replenish their ranks 389 392. Human, Half-Devil, Merman, and Flame Army forces responded with bounties and campaigns against Devil race leaders 392.
Lucifer's revival united Devil race members through his bloodline dominion 405. However, Lucifer was defeated by Figo, the final lurking Five-Lamp Demon General was eliminated, and the Devil race was declared finished as a military threat 407.
