Shikaku attended the Ninja Academy alongside Shimura Bing San, though he was substantially older; the Ino–Shika–Cho trio were all over nine years old, while Bing San was not yet four. He first approached Bing San over a chess manual and agreed to teach him to read before borrowing it. 3 5

At the academy, Shikaku displayed familiarity with clan affairs. He corrected Bing San's assumption that the Hyuga and Uchiha clans were hostile, explaining that the Hyuga Great Elder and Uchiha Third Elder had been teammates and that Hyuga Kuji and Go were their grandsons. 4
