Background / History

Tachibana Muneshige was the former Great General of the Land of Wind and, alongside the Second Kazekage, was known as one of the nation’s “Twin Pillars.” He commanded the country’s samurai, was deeply loved by its people, and was reputed to have once killed seven enemy jōnin and more than ten chūnin alone before retreating unharmed. 20

After his nephew became Kazekage, Muneshige was ostracized and forced to resign. Despite his age, he remained a figure of exceptional military value and was accompanied by five retainers, including his adopted son, Koma Sadanori. 20

Muneshige later entered Konohagakure with his retainers while apparently searching for a missing high-ranking Sunagakure official. When confronted by Jiraiya, Bing San, and Asuma, he declared his intent to grant them an “honorable death.” 17 20 He later told Hiruzen that coming to Konoha had not been his own wish and that he had been forced to come and die. 19

When Root arrived, Muneshige personally remained behind to face Danzō while directing his retainers to retreat. He injured Danzō and forced Hiruzen to intervene. 18

Battle Against Hiruzen and Danzō

Muneshige fought Hiruzen and Danzō simultaneously, countering their coordinated ninjutsu and close-combat attacks. His Secret Technique: Sword Draw cleared the battlefield with a devastating omnidirectional slash. 19

His immediate fate was not directly witnessed after Sword Draw, but official reports later stated that he died of exhaustion in Konoha. His death became a major political trigger for the Land of Wind’s war with Konoha. 19 22

Posthumous Legacy

Hiruzen publicly portrayed Muneshige as a Land of Wind general who had infiltrated Konoha to attack civilians. He claimed credit for killing Muneshige, then transferred Muneshige’s “Unrivaled in the West” title to Bing San for political purposes. 23
