Jiraiya is a white-haired shinobi with red oil paint on his face. He wears a green jōnin vest and a forehead protector that he leaves crooked. 11

Personality

Jiraiya is openly lecherous and repeatedly spies on the public bathhouse, even returning to the same tree to peep after earlier humiliation. 11 16 His shamelessness and appetite for mischief often make him the target of Tsunade, Orochimaru, and Bing San’s retaliation. 11 12 23

Despite his unserious conduct, he becomes focused in danger. When an elite Sand Ninja squad ambushes Bing San and Asuma, he immediately identifies the threat, stalls for time, and places himself between the children and their attackers. 16 17 He is also fiercely loyal to Tsunade, abandoning his command position to urgently locate her after receiving news that her mother is critically ill. 29 30

Story Role / Major Arcs

Bathhouse Incident

Bing San catches Jiraiya peeping at a bathhouse and throws an open bottle of aphrodisiac at him. While affected, Jiraiya grabs Bing San and flees into the civilian district, where Orochimaru worsens the situation by directing more of the powder at him. Jiraiya is subsequently found humiliated in the Hokage’s office. 11

At an Akimichi barbecue afterward, Bing San uses the incident to make Jiraiya pay Tsunade’s gambling debts and fund the meal. Jiraiya nevertheless asks Bing San to share any future “good stuff” with him. 12

Sand Ninja Ambush

Jiraiya helps Bing San and Asuma activate the Hokage’s crystal ball, but detects hidden intruders before they can leave. When an elite Sand Ninja squad attacks, he protects the two children while fighting multiple opponents. 16

He summons Gamakichi to defend them while Bing San prepares Water Clear Wave, then endures wounds to prevent the enemy from interrupting the technique. When Tachibana Muneshige appears, Jiraiya declares that anyone wishing to kill Bing San must first step over his corpse. 17

Third Shinobi World War

Jiraiya joins Konoha’s Sand Ninja front as a commander, though he clashes with Aburame Torune over the urgency of a retreat. 30 He later arrives with Gamabunta as reinforcements, cooperating with Orochimaru, Danzō, and Shin’nosuke Sarutobi to halt the Sand Ninja offensive. 32

A year later, he is removed as northern-front commander and sent toward the Land of Earth as bodyguard to ANBU captain Mitarai Zixiao. 33

Rescue at the Western Earth Mound

Jiraiya and Danzō lead a force of roughly 300 elite ninja into an attempted strike on the Rock Ninja supply line, only to be caught in a Sand–Stone alliance trap. 34 During the breakout, he commands the wounded Konoha force to prepare for an engagement and coordinates with Minato’s Flying Thunder God escape. 36

After Danzō is critically injured, Jiraiya carries him into the medical camp and accompanies Minato’s emergency transport to Amegakure’s main camp. 37

Land of Water Front

Jiraiya leads Konoha forces sent to replace the Rock Ninja at the Land of Water front, forcing Fugaku Uchiha and the Uchiha clan to return to Konoha. 45 47 During the Mist Ninja assault, he battles Jūzō Biwa and Suikazan Fuguki simultaneously. 48
