Asuma attended the Ninja Academy alongside Bing San, Obito Uchiha, Kakashi Hatake, Rin Nohara, Yūhi Kurenai, and Might Guy. He and Bing San were already acquainted because their fathers were partners and their homes were close, though their differing mental maturity initially kept them from playing together often 3 5.

During their first taijutsu exercise, Asuma confidently provoked Bing San. The match became an unskilled brawl in which Bing San struck Asuma’s jaw, triggering a powerful blow that sent him flying and knocked out one of his teeth 5 6.
