Background / History

After Enkidu's death taught him the terror of mortality, Gilgamesh undertook a journey to seek eternal life. He crossed Mount Mash and the Sea of Death to meet Utnapishtim, but failed the trial of remaining awake for six days and seven nights. Utnapishtim's wife nevertheless enabled him to obtain an immortality herb from the sea floor. 33

During the Fuyuki Holy Grail War, Gilgamesh manifested as Archer. He initially had no intention of remaining in the human world, considering his appearance merely an opportunity to eliminate thieves coveting his treasury. Li Zihan gained his serious attention by offering information on how Gilgamesh might meet Enkidu again in a future Grail War. 40

In the Uruk era, Gilgamesh ruled as the Wise King. Having foreseen Uruk's destruction, he transformed the city into a battle city, established a grand barrier, summoned Heroic Spirits, and personally managed its wartime administration despite the strain on his Magic Power. 182

Appearance

Gilgamesh is repeatedly associated with gold, from his title as the Golden King to the golden ripples of his treasury. He has ruby-like eyes and a distinctive, resonant baritone voice. 67 234

As Archer, Gilgamesh is extravagantly proud, dismissive of modern things, and quick to treat adversaries as beneath him. He takes visible pleasure in testing others with overwhelming force, viewing Alcaeus as desirable prey after the demigod becomes capable of hurting him. 37 68

His arrogance is tempered by his attachment to Enkidu. The prospect of meeting his friend again immediately dispels his mockery, and he refuses to use the Chains of Heaven for survival because they retain Enkidu's will. 40 70

As Uruk's Wise King, he is more patient, calculating, and focused on utility. He does not easily anger at Li Zihan's audacity, evaluates him as a potential asset, and entrusts him with missions while prioritizing Uruk's security. 190 198

Despite his contempt for gods and his refusal to yield before stronger enemies, Gilgamesh respects courage and persistence. He acknowledges the Sumerian Gods' resolve against Tiamat and insists that humanity may be destroyed, but cannot be defeated. 243 240
