Background / History

Arrival in Japan

Athena arrived at a Tokyo port devastated by a tsunami, where she sensed Poseidon's lingering power and searched the seawater for the essence stripped from her. Poseidon was both connected to that lost essence and regarded as her nemesis in Greek legend. 116

She confronted Li Zihan after identifying that he had usurped power connected to Poseidon and Heracles. During their first clash, she dismissed his provocations, recognized Gungnir as carrying the aura of the Norse Divine King, and petrified a summoned sea monster with her Mystic Eyes. 118

Li offered to return the Gorgon Stone after seven days if Athena remained beside him during that period. Though she considered a god and a God Slayer traveling together absurd, she accepted the temporary agreement. 119

Defeat and Binding

After receiving the Gorgon Stone, Athena attempted to restore herself through a Word of Power invoking the “thrice-united goddess.” Her body briefly matured into a queenly adult form before her depleted divine power made the transformation collapse. 132

Athena nonetheless chose to fight Li Zihan, accepting that an Unwilling God's fate was to battle God Slayers regardless of the risk of death. Li Zihan ultimately pierced her with Gungnir and overwhelmed her with golden swords. 133 135

Rather than kill her, Li Zihan captured Athena's soul with a Pseudo Holy Grail and sealed it into Gungnir as its spirit. She initially regarded herself as a prisoner and resented his treatment of her, but continued to manifest and converse with him. 135 136 137

Alliance and Renewed Purpose

While bound to Li Zihan, Athena deduced that he originated from another world by comparing his circumstances with Okita Souji's account. She later asked to see his world and to meet the Gorgon sisters, offering her full assistance in his battle against the Last King in return. 138 139

During the conflict with Gorgon, Athena refused to pretend that the Goddess of Beasts could be recruited. She judged that Gorgon had chosen revenge against humanity and that negotiation was impossible. 222

Athena also assisted Ereshkigal with moving the Underworld, as her own Underworld divine role gave her the relevant knowledge and authority. 225

Athena's diminished manifestation is a petite silver- or white-haired girl, usually dressed in a thin sweater, miniskirt, and over-the-knee socks; she has also worn a blue knitted hat. 132 136 After reclaiming more of her essence, she takes the form of a slender young woman with shoulder-length white hair, black eyes likened to the night sky, and fair skin. 354
