Background / History

Tong Haojing is the son of Tong Da and Wang Xiyue. After Tong Da dies, the family faces ostracism and accusations from residents of the Big House's west end. As a student at Tangdu Middle School, Tong Haojing and his classmate Mei Tingyu witness Hu Lian's fatal jump from a building; his inability to help leaves a lasting impression on him 1.

He spends three years in high school pursuing admission to a police academy, but fails the college entrance examination. At eighteen, torn between his ambition and an arranged marriage with Mei Tingyu, he leaves home on the day of their meeting. A chance reunion with Mei at a noodle shop restores his resolve; encouraged by her belief that joining the army is another path, he enlists 3 4 5.

Tong Haojing serves for six years and becomes a reconnaissance cadre in Unit A's Special Operations Unit. During a flood rescue, he insists on saving trapped civilians despite the risk to his mission, kills a venomous snake threatening the rescue team, and helps revive an unconscious comrade. His unit is later disbanded during military reforms, forcing him into civilian placement 7 8 9 21.

After returning to Tangdu, he intervenes in a riverside robbery and pursues Scarface into the Tangdu River. The resulting death of another suspect leads to police questioning and an early encounter with West City Police Station. He is eventually accepted into the Tangdu City Public Security Bureau, trains at Hexi Police Academy, and is assigned to West City Station under community officer Jiang Hongde 12 14 22 25.

Appearance

Tong Haojing is a tall, physically imposing young man whose bearing reflects his special-forces background. He is described as standing 1.8 meters tall, with a sharp, handsome face and a resilient, proud demeanor 9.

  • Dark, deep-set eyes and thick, sword-like eyebrows 9
  • High nose and defined lips 9
  • Short black hair and a tall, broad-shouldered build 47
  • A red birthmark on his hand, which Wang Xiyue uses to recognize him after his military service 9

Personality

Tong Haojing is idealistic, direct, and intensely driven by a sense of justice. Hu Lian's death, his dream of becoming a police officer, and his military rescue experience all reinforce his belief that he must act when others are in danger. He repeatedly chooses intervention over caution, whether confronting armed robbers, pursuing criminals, or entering Cuntoucao's home alone 3 7 12 31.

His strongest flaw is impulsiveness. In training, he injures a simulated perpetrator after emotionally associating the hostage with Mei Tingyu; as an officer, he acts on Cuntoucao's intelligence without following procedure, contributing to Cuntoucao's exposure and beating. His anger at perceived corruption also leads him into open conflict with Director Tang 23 45 46.

Despite this, Tong Haojing is compassionate and capable of reflection. He works to resolve Xiao Yanni's household-registration problem, forgives Hu Pan after Jiang's guidance, and feels responsible when Cuntoucao is harmed for acting as his informant 27 32 37 45.
