Background / History

Tongtian founded the Sect of Interception around the principle of granting all beings a chance at enlightenment. He holds that Saints should manifest the Way and guide sentient beings toward understanding rather than impose principles through overwhelming authority. To him, enlightenment ultimately perfects the rules of heaven and earth and leads beings beyond mortality. 6 7

He personally investigated misconduct among his outer disciples while disguised as True Lord Earth Mao. Fang Yang's understanding that the sect's doctrine and survival were inseparable impressed him enough to reveal his identity, elevate Fang Yang to core-disciple status, and make him his fifth personal disciple. 6 7

Tongtian invested heavily in Fang Yang's growth: granting him access to Golden Ao Island and the Myriad Phenomena Pavilion, assigning Qingcheng Mountain as his dojo, arranging Daoist Master Qisha as his guardian, creating the Immortal Demon God Art for his unique constitution, and personally refining treasures for him. 7 9 12 14 15

Although Daoist Duobao had once been Tongtian's most favored disciple, Tongtian gradually recognized that Duobao's pursuit of status and power had undermined the sect's future. He ultimately concluded that guidance could restrain actions but could not fundamentally change an unstable nature. 27 35 50 196

After Fang Yang proved himself through sect rectification, joint Dao propagation, and cultivation, Tongtian publicly appointed him Vice Sect Master. He entrusted Fang Yang with teaching and guiding disciples, overseeing punishments, and commanding the sect's immortals. 196 197 201

Appearance

When revealing himself after using the identity of True Lord Earth Mao, Tongtian appears as a young Daoist in a purple Daoist robe and purple-gold crown. Auspicious light and energy surround him, while the opening and closing of his eyes resemble revolving galaxies. 6

Personality

Tongtian is exceptionally open-minded in his teaching. He values disciples who think independently, forge their own paths, and challenge existing cultivation theories rather than merely repeating their teacher's methods. He regards a disciple as an individual first and believes they should eventually establish a lineage of their own. 13 35 197

His doctrine is inclusive without being indiscriminate. Tongtian explains that “all beings are equal in the face of teaching” means accommodating and integrating diverse ideas, not accepting every individual or action without judgment. 32

He is protective of disciples he considers worthy, particularly Fang Yang, but does not demand blind loyalty or self-sacrifice from them. He intervenes when Fang Yang's destiny is endangered, protects his Dao-proving breakthrough from interference, and repeatedly provides resources that allow him to cultivate safely. 15 79 106

Tongtian can distinguish personal attachment from sect affairs. His affection for Daoist Duobao delayed but did not prevent him from prioritizing the Sect of Interception's orthodoxy and future. 33 48 196
