Saint Mother Jin Ling is a renowned direct disciple of Sect Master Tongtian. Her roots and cultivation are described as surpassing Fairy Yun Xiao’s, and she had already proven the Dao to Grand Unity during the reign of Tian Huang. 17 83

She resides at the Star Palace on Star Picking Cliff, a precipitous peak wrapped in starlight. She commands immortals of her own and spreads a path of star cultivation that benefits other immortals while reducing the world’s spiritual-energy expenditure. 60 83 96

Although she is remembered as fated to die under the combined siege of the Three Great Sages, the Mount Squad, and Daoist Burning Lamp’s group, the current story depicts her actively changing the Sect of Interception’s course. 17

Jin Ling is competitive and initially fixated on obtaining Innate Spiritual Treasures. Her repeated failures at the Myriad Treasures Long River earned her the teasing reputation of the sect’s “Air Force,” yet she responds to setbacks with persistence rather than retreat. 17

Despite this competitive streak, she is protective of fellow disciples. When Fang Yang hooks the dangerous Wish Well, she immediately intervenes against its chaotic energy, even though they had only recently met. 18 Fang Yang’s firm refusal to pursue miscellaneous Daoist arts also causes her to reassess her own values: she recognizes that treasures which strengthen one’s foundation may exceed Innate Spiritual Treasures in worth. 19

She is deeply reverent toward Sect Master Tongtian and Old Ancestor Hongjun, but her loyalty to the sect’s fortune eventually outweighs her personal debt to Daoist Duobao. Jin Ling fishes in the Myriad Treasures Long River using Grand Unity vital energy as her rod and fate as her bait. Despite her reputation and formidable cultivation, she catches a useless mortal-world star, reinforcing her “Air Force” nickname. 17

She later saves Fang Yang from the chaotic energy surrounding the Wish Well and congratulates him after he successfully claims it. 18 After Fang Yang obtains the Heavenly Dipper Divine Gang, she abandons her narrow obsession with Innate Spiritual Treasures and recognizes the importance of treasures that improve strength and foundation. 19

Sect Reform

As corruption and demonic cultivation spread among the Sect of Interception’s outer disciples, Jin Ling joins Fang Yang and Saint Mother Wudang’s faction against Daoist Duobao’s supporters. 74

At the Mystic Gate Dao Discussion Assembly, witnessing the conduct of sect members and other immortals’ reactions makes her realize that “teach without discrimination” requires educating beings rather than passively accommodating every Daoist art. 109 She ultimately decides that preserving the Sect of Interception’s fortune takes precedence over protecting Duobao’s faction. 134
