Background / History

Nami first encounters Will alongside Carina while the two are fleeing armed pursuers on an East Blue island. Already recognized as an exceptionally experienced navigator, she becomes Will’s intended recruit after he realizes he cannot learn navigation effectively himself. After Will defeats their pursuers, Nami and Carina attempt to escape, but Will stops them and asks Nami to serve as his navigator. 4 8

On their first ship together, Nami studies a Grand Line sea chart recovered from the captain’s quarters, helps manage the captured treasure, and begins navigating for Will and Carina. She directs the crew toward Orange Town, using information about Buggy and a possible Grand Line chart to attract Will’s interest. 10 11

Nami initially fears Arlong Park more than any other destination. As a child, she witnessed her mother’s murder by Arlong, was taken away after Hachi discovered her navigational talent, and became trapped in an agreement to gather 100 million Berries to buy back her village. Her Arlong Pirates tattoo and trauma make her fear that confronting the fish-men will endanger Will, Carina, and the Konomi Islands. 17 18

Will rejects her former affiliation, declaring that her only identity is his navigator. After Arlong’s defeat and death, Nami learns that the villagers had known about her agreement all along; they had acted distant so she could flee without guilt if she failed.
