Background / History

Dai Mubai was born into the Star Luo imperial family as the younger brother of Dai Weisi and the son of Emperor Dai Yue and Queen Chu. Queen Chu died giving birth to him, a loss that fueled Dai Weisi's lifelong resentment toward his younger brother. Dai Mubai is described as taking after his mother’s gentler disposition, while Dai Weisi inherited their father’s ruthlessness. 103 112

He was formerly engaged to Zhu Zhuqing. The two relied on one another while enduring pressure from their older siblings, but Dai Mubai was the first to leave. When they met again, Zhu Zhuqing chose the family and peace she had found elsewhere; Dai Mubai accepted that they could no longer be together. 38 98 Their former romantic attachment later settled into familial affection, and they became sworn siblings. 112

During the Battle of Suotuo, Dai Mubai was captured alongside Dai Weisi. A Star Luo general later reported that Dai Mubai had been framed by compromised personal guards, including two Zhu family disciples close to Zhu Zhuyun. 97 98

After Star Luo's defeat, Dai Yue named Dai Weisi crown prince and granted Dai Mubai the title of King Oliver, sending him to Aojia City. Dai Yue also secretly arranged substantial funds for Dai Mubai in Barak, enough for him to live comfortably for the rest of his life. 98 103

City Lord of Aojia City

As Aojia City's new lord, Dai Mubai discovered that more than a thousand residents had cancelled their household registrations in two months to migrate to Barak. Learning that Barak's sale of artificially bred Soul Beasts gave ordinary people a safer, cheaper path to acquire Spirit Rings, he refused to obstruct them. 102

He recognized that Star Luo could not deny its people a better future merely because it could not provide the same opportunities. He instructed Chu Youjun to watch Barak's settlement policy and to leave for Barak when migration reopened for the final time. 102

Escape to Suotuo City

Dai Mubai learned that Dai Weisi had consolidated power in Star Luo City and placed Dai Yue under house arrest. Though he initially wanted to return for his father, Chu Youjun revealed that Queen Chu's family had long maintained an escape route for the prince who failed to inherit the throne. 103

He relocated to Suotuo City with the Chu Family's assistance. There, Tang Jiukong explained that Dai Mubai's capture during the Battle of Suotuo had been intended to save him from Dai Weisi, who would otherwise have killed him. 104

Dai Mubai signed a Grade A Peace Treaty with Barak. He agreed not to harm others, gather forces, or damage Barak's interests; in return, he could live freely in Suotuo City. 104 106

Alliance with Barak

While living in Suotuo, Dai Mubai became close to Tang Jiukong and regularly received news of his imprisoned father. He eventually asked Tang Ling to help rescue Dai Yue. 105 106 107

In exchange for Barak's assistance, Dai Mubai offered Star Luo City's defense deployment map. He reasoned that Barak's policies had already made popular support within Star Luo unreliable, making the map a valuable bargaining chip despite Barak's own intelligence network. 108

Break with Dai Weisi

When Dai Weisi used Dai Mubai's presence in Barak as a pretext for war, Dai Mubai publicly refuted the accusations. He exposed his brother's confinement of their father and declared that Tang Ling had saved his life, then severed ties with Dai Weisi before the opposing armies. 111

During Barak's capture of Aojia City, Dai Mubai helped distribute porridge to frightened civilians. He reassured them that even a former Star Luo prince could live safely in Barak and encouraged them to settle without fear. 112

As Barak's army advanced toward Star Luo City, Dai Mubai followed the Logistics Department and assisted with affairs in conquered cities. 113

Personality

Dai Mubai is calm under pressure and notably quick to accept an unfavorable reality. He received his exile without protest, signed Barak's peace treaty decisively, and chose cooperation over an unwinnable struggle against Dai Weisi and Barak. 98 104 108

Despite his royal upbringing, he is empathetic toward ordinary people. Rather than suppressing migration from Aojia City, he acknowledged that people had the right to seek a better life when Star Luo could not offer them one. 102

He remains filial toward Dai Yue, even though their relationship is complicated and Dai Mubai does not idealize his father. His request for Barak's aid is motivated by a desire to prevent Dai Yue from dying at Dai Weisi's hands. 103 105 106

Once convinced that Barak did not see him as a threat, Dai Mubai regained his more relaxed, sociable nature. He enjoys lively company, readily befriends Tang Jiukong despite their history, and hopes to travel the continent freely in the future. 104 105 107 111
