Background
Mark was formerly a Marine but was discharged after a physical examination revealed mental problems. He later worked with the CIA before becoming a mercenary. During an Egyptian mission, he turned against his employer after discovering the group was harming civilians, raiding tombs, and trafficking artifacts; his companions beat him and left him to die in the desert. Khonshu then chose him as an agent, making him the Moonlight Knight. 136
Mark lives with dissociative identity disorder. His known alternate personality, Steven Grant, embodies kindness and innocence, while the hidden Jake Rockley embodies his suppressed hatred and violence. 136
Within Yuri's mental formation, Mark confronts the memories behind his fragmented identity. He learns that he drowned his younger brother Roland and that Jake murdered their mother. Mark ultimately destroys Jake after breaking free of the memory world's restraints and illusions. 139 140 141
Personality
Mark is pragmatic, blunt, and irreverent toward Khonshu, despite recognizing that the Moon God saved his life and granted him power. He can be self-deprecating around Yuri, but he is also determined to remain useful rather than return to an ordinary life. 135 136 160
His confrontation with Steven shows a capacity for responsibility and compromise. Rather than erase the personality he created, Mark seeks an agreement for them to share their body openly; their later conflicts stem from the difficulty of maintaining that arrangement, not from a desire to destroy Steven. 136 137 152
Appearance
As the Moonlight Knight, Mark wears moon-white clothing or armor that manifests around his body. His forms change with the personality and power he is using. 141 143 144
- Standard Moonlight Knight attire includes a hooded cloak and crescent daggers. 141
- His armored form is fully enclosed in moon-white shrouds and carries curved blades on his back. 140 141
- After becoming Moon God, he can wield Khonshu's staff and reshape it into twin crescent blades. 160
Abilities & Skills
Moonlight Knight Physiology
Khonshu's power enhances Mark’s physical capabilities. Its effects intensify under moonlight, though Mark states that he does not necessarily lose access to his powers during daytime or in space. 143
- Enhanced stamina, speed, endurance, and strength. 143
- Can see spiritual entities and see in darkness. 143
- Can move unseen through deep shadows. 143
- Injuries heal while he is bathed in moonlight. 143
- The original extent of these powers depended on Khonshu's will. 143
Moonlight Knight Armor
After Jake is eliminated, Mark can switch between his familiar Moonlight Knight attire and a heavier armored form without sacrificing mobility. 141
- The armored form substantially improves his strength and speed; Mark estimates he could fight at least ten of his former selves. 141
- Moon-white shrouds manifest around him to form the armor. 142
- He uses crescent-shaped blades that can join into an “S”-shaped weapon. 142
Mental Resilience
Inside Yuri's formation-created memory world, Mark’s willpower becomes his decisive strength. 137
- Breaks mental restraints after confronting the truth of Roland's death. 140
- Heals a broken shoulder through mental energy within the memory world. 140
- Destroys memory illusions and eliminates Jake's personality. 140 141
- This feat occurred under the conditions of Yuri's formation and mental world. 137
Moon God Authority
After Khonshu's defeat, Mark absorbs the Moon God godhead and becomes its new holder. 160
- Controls the Rule of Deathly Stillness: within the reach of moonlight divine power, life force can be plundered. 160
- Recalls the Moon God Staff to his hand and transforms it into twin crescent blades. 160
- No longer relies on Yuri's temporary symbiote enhancement after the godhead fully integrates. 160
