Background / History

Fury initially serves under S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Alexander Pierce, whom he once regarded as a mentor and guiding figure. He becomes increasingly suspicious of Pierce after Yuri publicly invokes Hydra at the Triskelion; surveillance analysis confirms that Pierce reacts unnaturally to the name. Fury learns that Pierce removed the Tesseract from the Dark Energy Joint Operations Base and concludes that his former mentor is a Hydra mole. 98 99
