Background / History

Minato was acquainted with Hyuga Ritsu through their teachers: Minato studied under Jiraiya, while Ritsu studied under Hiruko. At Uchiha Obito’s funeral, Minato mourned his fallen student, reported that Iwagakure had withdrawn, and prepared to return north to monitor Kumogakure’s renewed activity 6.

After learning that Ritsu had returned to Konoha without orders amid the Hyuga Clan’s Byakugan theft crisis, Minato recognized Ritsu’s fear of him and reported the situation to the Third Hokage. He suspected Ritsu might attempt to flee the village with his parents rather than submit to the Hyuga Main House 16.

During the Hyuga unrest, Minato transported Hyuga Hiashi and other clan members from the eastern front to Konoha, then participated in the operation against Ritsu’s faction. His attempt to stop Ritsu with the Rasengan failed; Ritsu blocked the attack with Shikotsumyaku and later killed Hyuga Hisho and Hyuga Daisho 23 26 28.

As Kakashi’s teacher, Minato took the leak of Team Minato’s mission intelligence seriously. He comforted Rin over her sudden status as the Three-Tails’ jinchūriki, praised Kakashi for preserving evidence, and later promised to help uncover the truth behind Hatake Sakumo’s death 80 107.

Minato supported Sarutobi Hiruzen’s impeachment because he feared that a retired Third Hokage would continue ruling through his successor. He then gathered support among Konoha’s clans and was elected Fourth Hokage 125 128.

As Hokage, Minato reorganized Konoha’s political order, handled the punishment of former officials through village law, and refused to pursue further punishment against Hiruzen beyond his removal from office 129. He also planned Konoha’s campaign against Kirigakure as a means to secure reparations and strengthen the village financially rather than destroy the Mist Village outright 134 139.

Minato led operations against Kirigakure, Uchiha Ryūban’s replicas, Nagato’s Rinnegan forces, and the threat surrounding the Rinnegan. He advocated cooperation among the Five Great Ninja Villages while carefully protecting Konoha’s interests 134 192 213 230.

Uchiha Ryūban ultimately targeted Minato during Kushina’s childbirth, marking Minato with a Flying Thunder God formula and forcing him into a prolonged battle. Minato was critically wounded; before dying, he entrusted his newborn son Naruto to Hiruko 237 243 244.

Despite his considerate manner, Minato is decisive when responsibility demands it. He does not conceal difficult political positions, supports Hiruzen’s removal to prevent further interference, and makes strategic decisions based on Konoha’s long-term stability 125 129 134.

He favors cooperation and consultation as Hokage, regularly involving clan heads, advisors, and senior shinobi in major decisions. However, he is willing to use force, sealing techniques, and military pressure when diplomacy fails 128 133 204.
