Background / History
Kimimaro entered Konoha as part of Kirigakure's ninja-exchange delegation alongside Elder Genji, Suikazan Fuguki, Terumi Mei, Kisame, and Yuki. At the time, his sole concern was fighting; he provoked Hyuga Hizashi and was subdued by Uchiha Homura's dōjutsu, which subjected him to an illusion of repeated dismemberment and regeneration. 122 125
Initially manic and accustomed to Kirigakure's violent norms, Kimimaro expected retaliation after provoking Asuma. Instead, he was warned that any future violation of Konoha's laws would receive doubled punishment, while Asuma personally checked on him as a friend. This treatment, Konoha's rule-based discipline, and its care for injured shinobi began changing his outlook. 128
Hyuga Tenzo, a distant relative whom Kimimaro calls “Great Uncle,” became his mentor. Kimimaro studied Konoha's political systems, economy, security framework, and the Will of Fire under Tenzo, while serving as a sparring partner for Ninja Academy students. Encounters with Konoha's young elites—especially Kakashi, Shisui, Asuma, Obito, and Uchiha Aosui—forced him to recognize the limits of his former confidence in the Shikotsumyaku. 128 162
Fearing the Third Mizukage's impending purge of the Kaguya Clan, Kimimaro sought Tenzo's help. Tenzo advised him to gather reasonable clansmen, flee if necessary, and preserve those who could be saved. Kimimaro ultimately resolved not to defect immediately, but to build a covert alliance inside Kirigakure and prepare to overthrow the Third Mizukage. 145
After returning to Kirigakure, Kimimaro rose through the Internal Affairs Department. He protected persecuted shinobi, recruited allies, and built a hidden force while concealing his intentions from the Third Mizukage and Genji. His public loyalty was strengthened by taking responsibility for logistics and supervision rather than pursuing visible battlefield merit. 174 188 202 203
Following Kirigakure's collapse, Kimimaro led his faction to support Hiruzen Sarutobi and the Land of Water Daimyo's rebuilding agreement. Hiruzen appointed him to gather scattered Kirigakure forces, screen surrendered ninja, restore order, and rebuild the village under Konoha's backing. 204 205 216
Personality
Kimimaro began as an aggressive, battle-obsessed youth who believed the Shikotsumyaku made the Kaguya Clan nearly invincible. He preferred combat that tested strength and allowed improvement, but came to despise the indiscriminate slaughter and madness associated with his former clan mentality. 122 128 145
Konoha's influence makes him increasingly reflective, strategic, and politically aware. He learns to value companions, legal order, and the idea that shinobi are people rather than disposable tools. 128 162
Though sincerely devoted to rebuilding Kirigakure, Kimimaro is ambitious: he views his work in the Land of Water as the contribution that can earn him status in Konoha, ideally a position comparable to a Konoha Committee Member. His ultimate personal wish is to return to Konoha rather than become Mizukage. 174 188 214
