Background / History

Konoha Career and Secret Experiments

Orochimaru is Hiruzen Sarutobi’s disciple and grows up alongside Jiraiya. Hiruzen remembers him as an innocent, diligent, and intelligent child. He later earns his Sannin reputation through successive battles and becomes an important Konoha combatant 42 128 129.

While still serving Konoha, he secretly conducts inhumane experiments using the village’s substantial resources. He considers ordinary lifespans inadequate for learning every ninjutsu and pursues eternal life as the foundation of that ambition 36 128.

Kikyo Mountain Campaign

During Sunagakure’s offensive, Orochimaru attacks Zong Mi, the name used for Souya in these chapters. He deploys Manda, the Kusanagi Sword, and snake techniques, while his opponent counters with Gold Dust and sealing techniques. Zong Mi proposes supporting his forbidden-jutsu research with funds, personnel, and experimental assistance 35 36.

Orochimaru survives the Gold Dust Prison Flow and escapes the Golden Thorn House by moving underground. Rather than immediately returning to the front, he collects a fallen Aburame ninja’s corpse as research material 37 38 39.

The Third Kazekage and Rasa subsequently pressure him with Iron Sand and Gold Dust. Although Orochimaru injures Rasa, Zong Mi and Sasori combine sealing techniques with the Raiga Kurosuki puppet’s Lightning Release to restrict his escape and force negotiations 42 43 44 45.

The resulting bargain gives Souya access to Orochimaru’s snake summoning contract and an opportunity to inspect the Impure World Reincarnation scroll. Souya offers funds, technology, equipment, and two pairs of Three Tomoe Sharingan. Orochimaru initially prohibits him from summoning Manda in battle or using snake summons against Konoha. Souya releases him to preserve the prospect of future research cooperation 46 47.

Defection and Research Partnership

Souya later renews contact through a letter delivered by Manda, offering experimental materials and a place in Sunagakure. His support helps Orochimaru establish an underground laboratory near the Land of Fire–Land of Rivers border 112 128.

After his failed Sage Mode training damages his body, Orochimaru expands his search for suitable reincarnation vessels. His abduction of villagers and ninja, together with leaked information, exposes his experiments. Hiruzen confronts him, but Orochimaru refuses to abandon immortality and declares himself willing to sever any bond 127 128.

Hiruzen and Jiraiya fight to bring him back. Minato intercepts his attempted escape through Manda, applies the Self-Cursed Mark, and helps corner him inside Hiruzen’s Vajra Wall. Subsequent chapters establish that Orochimaru relocates and hands over Living Corpse Reincarnation research to Souya 129 130 134.

Their partnership then expands into secret medicine, bloodline research, and a simplified form of Sage Mode intended for Sunagakure’s ninja. Souya supplies Kaguya clan subjects, people who naturally absorb Nature Energy, and Uchiha bodies as research material 138 139 172.

Independent Cooperation and Otogakure

Orochimaru also cooperates with Black Zetsu, who permits him to conduct research on his body. He refuses to join Akatsuki, insisting that neither its goals nor those of Souya or Konoha concern him 176.

Following Iwagakure’s destruction, Orochimaru establishes Otogakure in the Land of Earth and becomes its Tsuchikage. Popular rumors portray him as a wronged genius who destroyed Iwagakure to avenge his treatment by Konoha. These stories attract rogue ninja and defectors, whom he welcomes as experimental subjects 197.

With Souya missing, Orochimaru abandons his earlier friendly stance toward Sunagakure. Otogakure and Danzo’s Root cause trouble in the Flying Bird Region, and Orochimaru demands the Sharingan Souya left behind. The Kazekage relinquishes most of them and requests further Cursed Seal inoculations despite the risk of hidden modifications 199.

As Tsuchikage, Orochimaru personally handles major matters but delegates routine village administration to assistants. He leaves taxation and economic authority to the Daimyo’s Mansion, helping secure the Daimyo’s cooperation 208.

Madara and Souya’s Return

Madara enters Orochimaru’s laboratory with Black Zetsu, seeking support against Konoha and commanding him to resurrect Hashirama. Orochimaru is intimidated: his techniques offer little protection against the Rinnegan, and the soul defects caused by Living Corpse Reincarnation make him especially vulnerable 208.

After Souya returns, he subjects Orochimaru to Kotoamatsukami. Orochimaru does not recognize that his thoughts have been altered. Souya orders him to move his research to a prepared Sunagakure laboratory, securing obedience strong enough to override even his lifelong pursuit of immortality 235.

Appearance

  • Pale face and golden, vertically slit pupils, repeatedly likened to a snake’s eyes 36 112 130.
  • Long, scarlet tongue, frequently extended to lick his lips, weapons, or kunai 35 39 128.
  • Hoarse, deep voice 36 139 172.
  • Wears a Konoha vest during his defection confrontation, a white kimono in a later laboratory scene, and a gray-blue robe when Madara visits Otogakure 128 171 208.
  • His unique Substitution Technique leaves his newly emerged body covered in sticky, pale-yellow liquid 43 130.

Personality

Orochimaru values knowledge and continued existence above comradeship or village loyalty. He regards aging as a greater emptiness than isolation and openly accepts harming others to pursue immortality. Rare bodies and unfamiliar powers excite him more than political office 128 139 172.

His curiosity is paired with caution and adaptability. He studies Gold Dust after fighting Zong Mi, exploits Rasa’s inferior control, and abandons covert tricks when confronted by two accomplished sealing specialists. He also recognizes practical value in opponents, praising Zong Mi’s reflexes and Minato’s abilities 35 44 46 130.

Although dismissive of ordinary loyalties, he cares about his earned reputation. Losing Kikyo Mountain under his watch would damage both his Sannin standing and his future operations. His alliances remain conditional: he believes Souya will tolerate outside partnerships while his research remains valuable, but turns against Sunagakure once Souya disappears 42 176 199.

Abilities & Skills

Snake Techniques and Body Flexibility

  • Tongue Snake Swallow: Releases a venomous snake from his mouth. It splits into two heads to bite and constrict its target; Zong Mi avoids the attack by becoming Gold Dust 35.
  • Snake-transformed limbs: Converts his hands into attacking snakes. Destroyed snake bodies retract into an intact human arm 35 44.
  • Exceptional flexibility: Twists his body in mid-air to evade Sasori’s Lightning Balls 44.
  • Eight-Headed Serpent transformation: Manifests during his unsuccessful attempt to learn Sage Mode 127.

Summoning Techniques

  • Manda: Summons the giant snake for battlefield attacks and to hold off pursuers. He also attempts to use Manda to return to Ryūchi Cave 35 129 130.
  • Demonic Statue of the Thousand Armed Killers: Expels a dense horde of venomous snakes carrying sword blades in their mouths 36 130.
  • Limit: Hiruzen’s Great Dragon Fire Technique burns through the sword-bearing snake horde 130.

Unique Substitution Technique

  • Produces a fresh body that crawls out of his mouth, allowing him to escape attacks and shed injuries 43 130.
  • Has a higher success rate than the ordinary Five Elements Substitution Technique, but consumes substantial chakra 43.
  • Sealing techniques can obstruct its use. Minato ultimately restrains him before he can perform another substitution 43 45 130.

Elemental Ninjutsu and Swordsmanship

  • Earth Style: Moves rapidly underground, conceals his presence, and escapes Gold Dust confinement. He learns to analyze Gold Dust’s structure after fighting Zong Mi 38 44.
  • Wind Style: Great Breakthrough: Generates a violent gale capable of scattering stones and tearing up vegetation 129.
  • Close combat: Uses rapid, forceful sword attacks and exchanges blows with Hiruzen’s Adamantine Staff 35 128.
  • Kusanagi Sword: Cuts and chips the Starfall Rod and splits Rasa’s Gold Dust waves 35 37 44.

Sealing Techniques

  • Breaks through Zong Mi’s attempted sealing and recognizes the controllable opening woven from Sasori’s chakra threads 37 46.
  • Stores a corpse in a scroll, then swallows the scroll for transport 39.
  • His expertise does not make him immune to sealing: Zong Mi and Sasori successfully restrict his escape, while Hiruzen and Minato later corner him 45 46 130.

Biological Research and Forbidden Jutsu

  • Human experimentation: Studies unusual bodies and bloodlines, including Shikotsumyaku and innate Nature Energy absorption 138 139.
  • Cellular techniques: An authority on human cell structure, transplantation, and cloning. Souya commissions Hashirama tissue for Sasori’s shoulder 139 172.
  • Living Corpse Reincarnation: Transfers his spirit into another person’s body to extend his life 128 134.
  • Impure World Reincarnation: Researches the forbidden technique and possesses its scroll; Madara later demands that he use it to revive Hashirama 45 46 208.
  • Cursed Seals: Can inoculate ninja with them, though Souya warns that he may secretly alter them without supervision 199.
  • Specialization: His biological expertise does not imply equivalent ability in unrelated fields such as electricity 139.

Research Limits and Vulnerabilities

  • No mastered Sage Mode: Retains limited Sage Chakra, but his failed training causes irreversible bodily damage 127 128.
  • Soul defects: Living Corpse Reincarnation weakens his resistance to powerful ocular abilities. Souya also identifies contamination of the user’s soul as a risk of absorbing others’ soul essence 134 208.
  • Experimental Rinnegan: Chapter 235 suggests combining Uchiha Shin’s Mangekyo Sharingan with Hashirama Cells as his next research direction; it does not establish that he successfully produces or awakens Rinnegan 235.
  • Kotoamatsukami: Cannot detect Souya’s alteration of his deeper consciousness, even while inhabiting a modified White Zetsu body 235.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Kusanagi Sword — Silver-shining blade used for close combat and ambushes; sharp enough to damage the Starfall Rod 35 37 44.
  • Ryūchi Cave summoning contract — Grants access to snake summons and becomes a major bargaining asset in his negotiations with Souya 46 47.
  • Impure World Reincarnation scroll — Allows Souya and Sasori to verify the technique’s authenticity before taking it back 46.
  • Underground laboratories — Concealed research facilities containing hospital beds, experimental subjects, glass containers, and instruments. Souya provides substantial funding, equipment, and personnel 112 128 172.
  • Hashirama’s corpse — Collected research material that Madara demands he use for Impure World Reincarnation 208.

Relationships

  • Souya / Zong Mi — Initially an enemy, then a research sponsor and trading partner. Supplies rare subjects and resources, restrains him through strength, and ultimately makes him an unwitting subordinate with Kotoamatsukami 35 46 139 172 235.
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi — Teacher who remembers his childhood fondly and tries to bring him back for judgment after discovering his experiments 128 129 130.
  • Jiraiya — Childhood companion and dear friend who refuses to accept his defection without a fight. Orochimaru reacts with resentment and disbelief when Jiraiya demonstrates Sage Mode 128 129.
  • Minato Namikaze — Konoha’s Fourth Hokage and the shinobi who intercepts his escape. Orochimaru gains firsthand respect for his speed and sealing skills 128 130.
  • Manda — Giant snake summon used in battle and escape attempts. Later seeks Orochimaru’s help becoming stronger after repeated defeats by Souya and Garaga 35 112 129 130.
  • Sasori — Battlefield opponent whose puppetry and sealing help force Orochimaru to negotiate; later benefits from his biological research 44 45 46 172.
  • Rasa — Opponent whose less-refined Gold Dust Orochimaru exploits to launch an underground sword ambush 43 44.
  • Third Kazekage — Battlefield adversary and cautious observer of Souya’s partnership with Orochimaru. Later yields Sharingan under pressure and requests Cursed Seal assistance 42 114 199.
  • Black Zetsu — Research collaborator who offers his body for study and encourages cooperation with Akatsuki. Later brings Madara to Orochimaru 176 208.
  • Danzo — Later works alongside Orochimaru’s forces to destabilize Sunagakure’s Flying Bird Region 199.
  • Madara Uchiha — Intimidates him and demands Hashirama’s resurrection. Orochimaru’s soul defects leave him poorly equipped to resist Madara’s Rinnegan 208.
