Background / History

Sasori was orphaned in Sunagakure after his parents died in war. He initially sought revenge against Konoha’s White Fang, then redirected his anger toward the Third Kazekage when White Fang’s death denied him that target. Souya intervened before this resentment consumed him, reframing Sasori’s pursuit of “eternity” around ending war and restoring the dead. 1

After learning from Chiyo that a forbidden technique to revive the dead truly existed, Sasori gained a new purpose: resurrecting his parents. He devoted himself to puppet-making, treating his creations as both art and a means toward that goal. Chiyo concealed that her own life-restoring technique would cost the caster’s life force. 5

He became one of Sunagakure’s foremost puppet masters, fighting alongside Souya in conflicts against Kirigakure and later participating in the Kazekage’s covert political operations. Sasori and Souya orchestrated the Daimyo’s assassination through controlled guards and puppetry, enabling Sunagakure to seize the estate’s wealth. 20 24 74 84

Sasori ultimately studied Sage Mode under Ichikishimahime’s guidance. He later applied Sage Mode Chakra to his puppets, creating Human Puppets capable of weakened but genuine Sage Arts. 100 104 140 181

Following the destruction of Konohagakure, Sasori and Souya attacked Kumogakure together and abducted its researchers. Sasori was subsequently reunited with his parents, fulfilling the aim that had driven him since childhood. 235

Appearance

Sasori is a red-haired, slender young man with delicate features and an outwardly cool, indifferent demeanor. His appearance changes over time through Sage Mode, eye transplants, and bodily modification.

  • Red hair; unusually large chakra reserves led Souya to speculate about possible Uzumaki ancestry. 24
  • Often wears gray-and-black clothing; later appears in a black robe. 100 180
  • His right eye was severely injured and later covered by a bandage. 172
  • Receives transplanted Sharingan and Hashirama cells; later possesses two Mangekyō Sharingan. 180 187 210
  • In Sage Mode, develops fine scales, serpentine facial traits, horns, and dark-purple markings around his eyes. 101 104 187

Personality

Sasori is calm, detached, and intensely focused on craftsmanship. He regards puppetry as art and rejects methods he considers crude, even when they are tactically useful. 24 140

Although initially emotionally hollowed out by grief, he becomes resolute after adopting the goal of reviving his parents. His pride is closely tied to his ability to stand beside Souya as an equal rather than remain protected behind him. 5 168

He is pragmatic in battle and untroubled by lethal methods, including poison, mind control, and the use of corpses as puppet materials. Yet he is deeply loyal to Souya, serving as a listener, protector, and constant companion during Souya’s grief over his master’s death. 24 30 170

Abilities & Skills

Puppet Technique

Sasori is an elite puppeteer whose chakra-thread control, combat awareness, and designs exceed Chiyo’s expectations for the next generation of Sunagakure puppeteers. 20 21 121

  • Controls multiple puppets simultaneously through chakra threads. 20
  • Uses puppets made from enemy corpses, including Iwagakure jonin and former Seven Ninja Swordsmen. 21 45 50
  • Teaches Puppet Technique, though he considers most students unable to follow his designs. 74 98
  • Authored a comprehensive guide to puppet creation and maintenance after ending his class early. 98
  • Pursues modular puppet designs that can be reassembled for speed or power. 168

Human Puppets and Sage Art

Sasori develops Human Puppets built with Earth Milk Jade and preloaded Sage Mode Chakra.

  • Human Puppets can perform Sage Art using stored chakra. 181
  • Puppet-performed Sage Art is estimated to be 30–40% weaker than Sasori’s own Sage Art. 181
  • A Human Puppet condensed a river into a water dragon to fight Rōshi. 181
  • His Kaguya Clan puppet can enter the second stage of the Cursed Seal when infused with Sage Mode Chakra. 189
  • He seeks to infuse Nature Energy into every puppet rather than rely on crude inorganic-object control. 140

Sage Mode

Sasori learns Ryūchi Cave-style Sage Mode with Souya and Ichikishimahime’s assistance.

  • Initially endures dangerous injections of natural energy that cause scales and snake-like transformations. 101
  • Successfully enters Sage Mode for the first time after sustained practice. 104
  • Cannot safely gather natural energy while maintaining high-speed puppet control in battle. 104
  • Later masters practical Sage Mode application and uses it to strengthen his sealing and mental-control techniques. 140
  • Can restore his strength by summoning Ichikishimahime to bite his wrist after leaving his enhanced state. 167

Poison

Sasori employs exceptionally corrosive and lethal poisons through his puppets.

  • The Black Ant Puppet poisoned Suikazan Fuguki after attacking from underground. 21
  • His poison helped reduce Juzō Biwa’s corpse to bones and paste-like remains, preventing recovery or escape. 24
  • Souya described Sasori’s poison as vicious enough to leave victims crippled or dead. 24

Sub-Brain Sand Control

A mind-control technique developed with Souya’s input.

  • Can seal selected memories and control weaker targets as living puppets. 30
  • Allows interrogation while ensuring the target provides truthful information. 30
  • Causes irreversible brain damage to controlled subjects. 30
  • Enhanced by Sage Mode Chakra and sealing techniques to exceed the Yamanaka clan’s control over memory. 140
  • Sasori implanted dual memory seals in agents from Amegakure, Konohagakure, and Kumogakure. 140

Ninjutsu Through Puppets

Sasori’s puppets can execute multiple elemental techniques and specialized combat functions.

  • Earth Release — Uses Great River of Mud, Earth Style Wall, and Earth Spear through puppets. 20 21 54
  • Wind Release — Disperses Hidden Mist with Great Breakthrough and unleashes destructive compressed wind attacks. 21 24
  • Water Release — Uses high-pressure water attacks and Great Waterfall Technique to counter Lava Release. 180
  • Lightning Release — Raiga Kurosuki’s puppet can use lightning techniques without hand seals, including Lightning Dragon Tornado. 45 53
  • Earth Spear reinforcement — His Iwagakure puppets withstand Kubikiribōchō strikes without damage. 21

Mangekyō Sharingan and Kamui

Sasori receives Sharingan transplants and Hashirama cells, eventually acquiring both of Obito’s Mangekyō Sharingan.

  • His right eye is transplanted with Kakashi’s Mangekyō Sharingan; Hashirama cells help him adapt to its power. 187
  • He infiltrates Kamui Space using Sage Mode sensory abilities and removes the Masked Man’s eye. 187
  • Later wields two Mangekyō Sharingan and a half-developed Kamui Susanoo. 210
  • Kamui intangibility protects his comparatively vulnerable puppeteer body. 215
  • His Susanoo cannot reach its final stages because he lacks Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan and Six Paths power. 210

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Black Ant Puppet — Ant-shaped puppet with six arms, red horns, a storage abdomen, and poison-based attacks. 21 41
  • Raiga Kurosuki Puppet — A puppet made from Raiga’s corpse, wielding purple lightning techniques. 44 45 53

  • He dislikes using his puppets for mundane labor, considering brick-moving with the Black Ant Puppet an insult to his art. 87
  • Sasori is drawn to unfamiliar power systems and materials that may advance puppetry, including Hoshigakure’s chakra cultivation, Ryūchi Cave mudstone, and Human Puppet techniques. 26 113 171
