History

Shen Gongbao traveled with Jiang Ziya to seek admission to the Heavenly Origin Sect. Before they arrived, East King Duke told Shen Gongbao that both men were chosen for the Investiture of the Gods and gave him a Fang Tian Hua Ji and a Karma Law fragment. Primordial Heavenly Venerate accepted both as registered disciples, but valued the human Jiang Ziya more highly than Shen Gongbao, whose Demon Race origins drew prejudice 128 129.

His resentment deepened as Jiang Ziya received better treatment. Shen Gongbao eventually killed Jiang Ziya, seized his treasures, and defected to the Interception Sect. Sect Master Tongtian accepted him as a direct disciple, taught him the Supreme Pure Dao Method, and sent him to support Di Xin. Di Xin appointed him a Grand Tutor of Great Shang 164 169 172.

Shen Gongbao later conducted the Investiture of the Gods, assigning most powerful divine positions to Great Shang’s side. After completing the ceremony, he used the karma it generated to prove his peak Quasi-Saint realm 229. During the Journey to the West, he became Sun Wukong’s adoptive father and intervened against Guanyin Bodhisattva on Wukong’s behalf 310 311.

Appearance

Shen Gongbao’s true form is a black panther. In Daoist form, he wears a black robe and is described as wild and somber 128 203.

• He has also appeared disguised as an old man wearing a bamboo hat and carrying a fishing rod 278.
• After Primordial Heavenly Venerate’s physical tempering, he appeared with a bruised face and darkened eyes 384 389.

Personality

Shen Gongbao is calculating and vindictive. He can present himself as humble or wronged to win support, as he did before Tongtian’s disciples, while pursuing his own plans 169 722. His loyalty to East King Duke and the Hongmeng Immortal Palace is explicit: he credits the Immortal Emperor’s help with his survival through the Investiture tribulation 562 716.

Shen Gongbao cultivates both Karma and Fate, using their connections to perceive hidden information, influence opponents, and conceal his actions 648 669.
