Background / History

The Heavenly Dao initially challenges Hongjun over Di Jun's disruption of the Great Desolation's intended tribulation and Heaven-Appointed Saints. Hongjun dismisses its objections, arguing that the broader course of events remains intact 110. Di Jun, meanwhile, plans to bring the Daos of Heaven, Earth, and Man under the Heavenly Court and chooses Taiyi to take the Heavenly Dao's position 110 121.

Hongjun later identifies the original Heavenly Dao as Pangu's lingering will, corrupted by malice and negativity. He and Di Jun agree to cooperate temporarily while acknowledging that they will ultimately compete over it 137.

Seeking to preserve its authority, the Heavenly Dao arranges a world-destroying Great Tribulation and secures the Chaos Demon Gods' cooperation. Its Four Poles Heaven descends, while the Chaos Demon Gods deploy their own Four Extremes Heaven 150 156 169. As destruction spreads through the Great Desolation's lower realms, Taiyi contests its control of the plane 173 176.

The beings of the Great Desolation invite Taiyi to rule as Heavenly Dao. He takes control of the plane and abolishes the Five Decays of Heaven and Man, the Three Disasters and Nine Calamities, and the Ten Tribulations. The displaced Heavenly Dao becomes a Heavenly Calamity 178. It subsequently destroys worlds beyond the plane to replenish and strengthen its origin 193 199. When Di Jun and Hongjun confront it, it attempts self-destruction; they suppress it, and its fall briefly collapses the Great Desolation's order 203 204.

Appearance

The Heavenly Dao manifests its will in several forms rather than maintaining a single described body:

• Golden wheel — appears in the void during its conversation with Hongjun 110 121.
• Pale golden vertical eye — forms when it addresses Shi Chen and Yang Mei; an eye also appears when it gathers the plane's power against Di Jun 162 203.
• Indistinct figure — manifests in Chaos with a cold, emotionless voice 168.

Personality

The Heavenly Dao speaks and acts with apparent indifference, prioritizing its authority over the lives within the plane. Its voice is described as devoid of emotion even when it proposes destroying the world 156 169. Under Di Jun's growing pressure, however, its speech betrays urgency, and it eventually panics when Di Jun and Hongjun move to suppress it 169 203.

• Can counterattack when directly defied, though as a rule-based lifeform it cannot freely intervene in sentient beings' affairs 113 175.

Tribulations and World Destruction

It uses calamities to kill beings without directly acting against them 175.

• Can strengthen the plane's layers with its origin to increase the intensity of calamities 175.
• Deploys the Four Poles Heaven and spreads destructive calamities through the Great Desolation's worlds 156 169 173.
• After losing its position to Taiyi, destroys other worlds to absorb Heavenly Dao origins and strengthen itself 193 199.

Relationships

• Hongjun — the Great Desolation's Heavenly Dao Spokesperson; he disputes its objections to Di Jun's changes and later helps suppress it 21 110 203.
