Background / History
Rocks initially encounters Mongge while attempting to take his ship. After Mongge defeats him and offers to teach him, Rocks accepts him as captain and begins training under him. His original objective is simple but immense: gain enough power to explore the world and ultimately surpass Mongge. 2 7
Mongge subjects Rocks to exhausting physical conditioning, navigation duties, sea training, and combat instruction. Though Rocks initially lacks Haki and is regarded as a novice by Elbaf’s elders, his growth is unusually rapid. Two months after joining the White Wolf Pirates, he defeats the young giant Healding by using newly learned Soru rather than challenging the giant’s physical strength directly. 7 14 15
Rocks becomes an official White Wolf Pirates member after defeating a CP0 leader. By then, he has surpassed Lipri in ordinary open combat, though the confined deck of a ship still favors her overwhelming size and strength. 95 104
His fight with Divine Knight Saint Kurt becomes a turning point. Rocks damages his own hearing to counter Kurt’s voice-based Devil Fruit power, awakens Observation Haki fully, and later releases Conqueror’s Haki when Newgate is threatened. Despite these gains, Mongge must ultimately save him. 133 135
Dissatisfied with relying on Mongge and convinced that comfort would halt his growth, Rocks leaves the White Wolf Pirates. Mongge permits him to return and challenge him in ten years. 148 149
Traveling alone exposes Rocks’ lack of practical seamanship: his ship is destroyed in a storm, he becomes stranded, and he realizes he never learned navigation or how to identify edible sea fish. He later reaches the Kingdom of Margra, recruits Baroque, and uses repeated battles with CP0 operative Grindelwein to force his Haki past its limits. 155 167 170
After defeating Grindelwein, Rocks establishes the Rocks Pirates. Although he has reached Admiral-level strength, his crew remains immature and largely dependent on him. He repeatedly tries to recruit Newgate, who refuses. 171 187
Appearance
Rocks is a human male in his early twenties, under two meters tall, with messy black hair and a distinctive “D”-shaped smile. 5 38 74
- Initially appears comparatively neat while serving under Mongge. 187
- Becomes increasingly scruffy after leaving the White Wolf Pirates, with an untrimmed beard, rounder face, and disheveled clothing. 155 167 187
- His poor self-care becomes so severe that Newgate initially fails to recognize him. 187
- Usually fights with a sword, but treats swordsmanship and bare-handed combat as interchangeable expressions of strength. 96 135
Personality
Rocks is fiercely ambitious and measures himself against the strongest people he knows, especially Mongge. He considers becoming an official crew member only a first step toward surpassing his former captain, and he leaves the White Wolf Pirates because he fears dependence and comfort will make him stagnate. 104 149
He is intensely disciplined in training and embraces high-risk battles as the fastest route to growth. Even after severe injuries or defeat, he focuses on what he can learn from the loss rather than abandoning his goal. 37 135 170
His pride often makes him impulsive. Rocks dislikes asking Mongge for guidance after leaving, regards recruiting talented people as more efficient than training ordinary subordinates, and initially mishandles the Osgood Island operation by prioritizing a direct confrontation over its rescue objective. 196 197 205
Despite his aggression, Rocks has a sense of obligation. He leaves the White Wolf Pirates openly rather than stealing away, refuses to take Mongge’s money, supports Mongge during the Acropolis Port conflict, and agrees to evacuate Osgood Island’s ordinary residents alongside the scientists. 149 155 209 216
