Background / History

Meruem was born prematurely by tearing his way out through the Chimera Queen's abdomen, leaving her unable to reproduce. He regarded her as insignificant once she had fulfilled her purpose of producing him. 177 178

After establishing himself in NGL, Meruem encountered Su Wu outside the royal palace. Their first battle devastated the palace and surrounding area. Although Su Wu injured him with Hamon, Meruem survived, compensated Su Wu with palace treasures after damaging Ugly Treasure, and began treating him as a strong individual worthy of direct communication. 176 177

Meruem later relocated to the Dongguotuo Republic after discovering its larger palace, internet access, and human books. Learning more about humanity made him reconsider the scale of human civilization and initially pause his expansion, though he later resumed plans to kill humans and rule the world through Neferpitou's controlled soldiers. 181

While ruling from the East Gorteau palace, Meruem developed an interest in chess and became undefeated against local challengers. His defeat by the blind human girl Komugi deeply humiliated him and began a gradual change in his outlook. 182

During the humans' assault on the palace, Meruem prioritized Komugi's safety and ordered Neferpitou to heal her. He subsequently fought the enhanced Netero before Su Wu sealed him inside the Prison Realm. 185 187

He nevertheless respects strength. Su Wu's ability to challenge and injure him earns Meruem an unusual degree of tolerance, while his weaker Royal Guards are reprimanded for disrespecting a powerful opponent. 177
