Background
Lu Yishan rose from commoner origins to become Dali Kingdom's Grand Tutor during an era of depleted cultivation. In an earlier war, he led Dali's soldiers and cultivators in a starlight array, tore open the star curtain with his bare hands, and drew down a river of stars to repel Yuan Meng cavalry; their half-step Tenth Realm commander was left badly wounded. His actions preserved Dali and made him a legendary figure within the kingdom. 215 218
Dali's later ruler gradually stripped Lu Yishan of authority and marginalized him despite the officials' recognition that Dali owed its survival to him. Before Zhao Huangting persuaded him to aid An Le, Lu Yishan intended to abandon his position, avenge himself against Gu Baijing, and live in obscurity. 215 226
Zhao Huangting had expected An Le to reclaim the Central Plains and unite the world, and specifically sought Lu Yishan's assistance. Lu initially refused, but ultimately chose to support An Le after Zhao's death. 214 215
Appearance
Lu Yishan is a thin scholar who usually sits in a wheelchair. He has flowing black hair and a refined, gentle presence despite the forceful and often decisive nature of his words. 215
- Usually wears a scholar's robe, including green or blue robes in later appearances. 215 259 383
- Has flowing black hair; his hair may be left unbound during battle or while operating the Star Gazing Diagram. 215 219
- Uses a wheelchair, later described as metal. 215 251
- His eyes can appear filled with shifting starlight when deducing events or manipulating his supreme treasure. 218 259
Personality
Lu Yishan is calm, courteous, and observant. He generally speaks with a gentle smile and treats even tense situations with measured composure, but he is neither passive nor indecisive. He is willing to make forceful strategic choices when Dali, An Le's cause, or the people under his care are threatened. 215 227 259
He is exceptionally confident in his own intellect. While confronting Star Picking Sect Supreme Elder Duan Yukui, he bluntly attributed his ability to use the Star Gazing Diagram to being smarter than the sect's hereditary inheritors. 216
His loyalty to An Le develops from honoring Zhao Huangting's request into a sincere belief that An Le can restore the Central Plains, unite the world's fortune, and bring peace. Lu Yishan consequently accepts the burden of administration and military planning so that An Le can cultivate without distraction. 224 241 407

Story Role / Major Arcs
Joining An Le and securing Jinguan City
Lu Yishan first openly aligns with An Le during the conflict around Jinguan City. He convinces Yang Kang to surrender by framing An Le as the hope for restoring the mountains and rivers, then proposes seizing the Star Gazing Diagram while the Star Picking Sect's Grand Elder is sealed away. 214 215
Working with An Le inside the diagram, he takes control after Duan Tianyu's Primordial Spirit is destroyed. The victory gives Lu Yishan access to a supreme treasure suited to his talents and establishes the trust between him and An Le. 216
Defense of Jinguan City

He seals enemy escape routes, supports An Le and Wang Yansheng, and helps secure the death of Daoist Qingyun. The battle confirms his willingness to fully commit to An Le's cause. 224
Return to Dali and Tenth Realm breakthrough
Lu Yishan's reputation causes Dali officials to yield when An Le's group enters the capital, allowing the city to be taken with virtually no resistance. He then assumes responsibility for Dali's affairs while An Le cultivates and Wang Yansheng guards the city. 226
When Upper Realm enemies attack the Star Picking Platform, Lu Yishan holds the Star Gazing Diagram's defenses with Su Zhanxian's support. He uses the pressure of battle and his connection to the diagram to break through to the Tenth Realm, then traps Hu Huangyin in a stellar domain. 230 231
Expansion, alliance, and the Northern Expedition
Lu Yishan develops Dali City, trains and commands the Dali New Army, and coordinates with Li You'an's Xiliang City. He also negotiates a temporary Yuan Meng–Dali cooperation against Xiliang before the two powers become open rivals. 245 251 285
