Dumbledore had not asked him a single question from beginning to end.
That did not put Lynn at ease. The more the old bee acted like this, the more uneasy Lynn felt.
He gave Lynn a strange feeling, as if... as if he were saying, I won't ask anything, and you shouldn't say anything either, because I already know all the answers.
Lynn did not know what Dumbledore knew. What he needed to figure out now was how to endure Professor McGonagall's wrath.

Lynn hesitated and paced around the entrance twice. Before he could make up his mind to go in, the doors of the Great Hall were opened from within.

Lynn was caught off guard and jumped in fright. Then he looked at her sheepishly and promptly confessed from the bottom of his heart.

"Belloc, I always thought you were a clever person, but today you made such a foolish mistake!" Professor McGonagall was clearly deeply disappointed in Lynn and had already decided on his punishment.
"Slytherin will lose twenty points because of this, and you will face a month of detention!"
For what Lynn had done, this punishment was already lenient. He immediately said that he humbly accepted the professor's criticism, would work hard to correct his mistakes, and strive to do better in the future—cross that out—and never offend again.
